The Trainee Survey Technician role is an entry-level position designed to develop technical competence in survey, positioning, and subsea equipment through structured training, supervised hands-on experience, and gradual exposure to offshore operations.
The role supports the onshore workshop and offshore teams while building the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to progress into a fully competent Survey Technician position. The Trainee will work under close supervision, learning company systems, equipment, Quality standards, and Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) requirements.
Onshore / Base Responsibilities
- Assist with the preparation, testing, calibration, and maintenance of survey and subsea equipment under supervision.
- Assist with goods-in inspections, inventory control, and workshop housekeeping.
- Support fault-finding activities and basic equipment checks as part of the technical team.
- Learn correct handling, storage, and transportation of sensitive survey equipment.
- Assist with mobilisation and demobilisation activities for offshore projects.
- Support equipment configuration activities, including software setup and interface checks, under guidance.
- Maintain accurate records, including workshop logs, calibration records, and asset documentation.
- Assist with goods-in inspections, inventory control, and workshop housekeeping.
- Participate in structured training programmes, mentoring, and “STR Academy” the company’s competency development plans.
Offshore Responsibilities (As Competency Develops)
- Assist Survey Technicians with the installation and operation of survey and positioning systems offshore.
- Observe and support data acquisition, system monitoring, and basic troubleshooting.
- Assist with sensor mounting, cable management, and survey spread setup.
- Maintain offshore technical logs and assist with reporting under supervision.
- Adhere strictly to offshore regulations, Permit-to-Work systems, and Company and Client Quality + HSE requirements.
Training & Development
- Undertake structured technical and safety training as defined by the Company.
- Work towards achieving required offshore certifications and competency milestones.
- Develop practical understanding of survey equipment, data acquisition systems, and offshore workflows.
- Progress toward independent working capability in line with “STR Academy” the companies competency scheme.
Essential:
Technical qualification or ongoing study in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, or Engineering discipline (NC / HNC / HND / Degree or Apprenticeship pathway preferred) or strong demonstrable interest in engineering and offshore technology.
