Role Purpose:
We require an experienced electronics design engineer to provide subject matter expertise in the development of advanced battery management electronics and associated control systems for electrified platforms and energy storage applications. The successful candidate will act as a technical authority within the organisation, leading the development of BMS architectures, hardware concepts and technical strategies for customer and internal projects. They will provide deep technical guidance across the full development lifecycle and support the wider engineering team in delivering safe, robust and innovative battery management solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
  •  Act as the technical authority for and lead developed of advanced BMS electronic architectures for high- and low-voltage battery systems and electrified platforms 
  • Define and review hardware requirements, technical specifications and system architectures for BMS applications 
  • Support development of robust electronic designs incorporating battery monitoring ICs, microcontrollers, isolated communications, current sensing and power management systems 
  • Lead technical reviews of schematics, PCB layouts and system integration activities with particular focus on safety, EMC and reliability 
  • Provide technical leadership for hardware verification, validation and fault investigation activities 
  • Support development of hardware safety concepts, DFMEA/FMEA activities and compliance with relevant functional safety standards 
  • Support integration activities with software, controls, systems, EDS and mechanical engineering teams 
  • Provide technical support to customer discussions, concept studies, proposals and technology roadmaps 
  • Investigate and assess emerging technologies, components and methodologies relevant to battery management systems 
  • Develop engineering standards, technical guidance and best practices for BMS hardware development 
  • Mentor and support development of engineers across the wider electronics and electrification teams 
  • Support suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure robust implementation of BMS designs
 Qualifications, Experience and Skills Required:
  • Degree qualified in Electronics Engineering or similar discipline 
  • Extensive experience in development of battery management system electronics for lithium battery systems including BMS IC selection and integration from major semiconductor vendors
  • Experience in schematic design, PCB layout review and design verification for safety-critical applications
  • Experience of simulation and modelling tools for circuit analysis and verification 
  • Strong practical laboratory and debugging skills including investigation of complex system-level issues 
  • Experience supporting hardware development to functional safety standards and engineering processes 
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and guidance across multiple concurrent projects
Preferred:
  • Experience within automotive, energy storage, aerospace or other highly regulated industries 
  • Experience of electronics for power electronics systems or traction battery applications 
  • Experience of high-voltage test environments and safe working practices 
  • Knowledge of standards such as ISO 26262, IEC 61508, UN ECE R100 or equivalent 
  • Experience contributing to technical strategy, technology roadmaps or research activities 
  • Experience of FPGA integration or advanced diagnostic architectures 
  • Design of Printed Circuit Boards for low- and high-voltage applications
System or Knowledge:
  • Expert understanding of battery management system architectures and associated safety mechanisms 
  • Strong knowledge of battery cell behaviour, battery pack architectures and system integration considerations ·       Strong expertise in analogue and mixed-signal circuit design for precision voltage, current and temperature measurement applications 
  • Strong understanding of high-voltage battery systems including sensing, isolation, protection and fault detection mechanisms 
  • Strong experience with communication interfaces such as SPI, I2C, CANbus and isolated communications architectures 
  • Strong understanding of high-voltage isolation, creepage/clearance and protection requirements 
  • Understanding of EMC, grounding, shielding and noise mitigation in battery and power electronics systems 
  • Knowledge of component reliability, derating and design for harsh operating environments

Location and Travel:
  • You must be eligible to work in the UK and have no restrictions for world-wide travel. 
  • This role is based at our Head Office in the UK (Coventry), with flexibility for remote working up to 2 days a week. 
  • Working hours are 0900 to 1700, 5 days a week, however some travel is expected, and flexible working patterns are essential to the role.
