Role Summary
The Manager is a senior technical and delivery role within the tax advisory function, responsible for leading client engagements, owning project delivery, and acting as the primary point of contact for clients and connected professional advisers.  

This role requires a skilled tax professional with a broad understanding of tax advisory concepts and planning as Managers will need to combine strong technical expertise with commercial awareness, leadership capability, and accountability for outcomes. 

The role demands strong project management skills and involves shaping tax advice, reviewing work, supporting and developing colleagues across the team whilst ensuring an excellent client service. Commercial awareness is crucial, with the individual expected to contribute to monthly targets, identify additional tax planning opportunities, and suggest improvements to tools and processes.  

This role represents a transition from “technical specialist” to “leader of people, projects, and client relationships” and is a key feeder role for Senior Manager and Director positions. 

The role can also include contributions to business development; though this will not necessarily be a requirement of the role.  
 
Key Accountabilities

Technical Leadership & Delivery
Demonstrate a strong and practical understanding of UK tax legislation, with the ability to recall core rules and confidently interpret legislation.
Regularly use tax legislation and wider authoritative resources, including specialist publications and Tolley AI, to support complex advisory work.
Maintain awareness of developments in tax law, HMRC interpretation, and relevant case law.
Identify tax risks within planning work and understand how multiple taxes interact within advisory scenarios.
Identify and apply relevant case law principles to specific project scenarios.
Lead technical brainstorming and creative planning discussions, independently forming and articulating potential solutions and outcomes with clear rationale.
Conduct first-level reviews of work prepared by colleagues, identifying errors, omissions, and areas for improvement.
Delegate research effectively and integrate colleagues’ findings into coherent, high-quality technical outputs.
Can (as required) independently prepare detailed, well-reasoned technical notes and carry out specific research as driven by project needs to support tax advice or the structuring of new advisory solutions for clients.
Complete a wide range of tax calculations accurately, supported by appropriate conclusions.
Clearly articulate information requirements for delivering tax advice and ensure teams obtain the necessary inputs.

Project Ownership & Delivery
Take full ownership of client projects and be accountable for delivery, quality, and timeliness.
Independently deliver work, including in unfamiliar areas, escalating appropriately with informed views and proposed solutions.
Plan, structure, and schedule all tasks required to deliver tax planning projects effectively.
Communicates expectations clearly and provide regular progress updates.
Actively managing stakeholder expectations, including clients, solicitors, and accountants, to maintain control of project delivery.
Delegate work effectively, clearly communicating responsibility and accountability.
Support colleagues in scheduling and prioritising their work. Ensure all delegated work meets the required standard prior to Director review or sign-off.
Demonstrate a deep and practical understanding of internal delivery systems (TaxDome, Outlook, Word Templates, Teams, Visio) and support others in their use.

Communication & Client Management
Act as the primary point of contact for clients across projects. Take a leading role in client meetings and discussions while ensuring inclusive participation from colleagues.
Communicate confidently and professionally, and co-ordinate effectively, with all stakeholders involved in an engagement. Proactively manage internal communication to ensure efficient and collaborative delivery.
Promote collaborative working across project teams.
Agree and communicate clear plans of action following meetings.

Commercial Awareness & Business Contribution
Understand monthly revenue targets and how managed projects contribute to achieving them.
Take ownership for delivering a defined proportion of the team’s target.
Actively intervene where required to avoid missed targets or delivery slippage.
Monitor time spent on projects and ensure it is appropriate and commercially justified.
Lead by example in the application of tools and processes and actively suggest improvements.
Identify additional or wider tax planning opportunities arising from client work and progress these potential opportunities following discussions with a Director.
Can support Directors in winning new work often taking ownership of communication and delivery of proposals and illustrations to demonstrate the value of tax advice to potential clients.
Recognise and pursue cross-selling opportunities with other parts of the business.

Act as a role model for junior colleagues, demonstrating behaviours expected within the business. 
Represent the tax function professionally as an ambassador of the firm, both internally (and externally, where appropriate). Lead by example in adherence to company policies and encourage compliance within the team.

Remain approachable and supportive, regardless of seniority. Demonstrate discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive or confidential information. 
Actively seek feedback from colleagues at all levels and take visible action in response.

Skills & Experience Required

Essential
Strong technical expertise in UK tax advisory work.
Proven experience leading tax projects and managing client relationships.
Aptitude, and a willingness, to learn and engage actively in technical development.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including confident client-facing communication.
Commercial awareness and understanding of revenue targets and time management.
Confidence in delegating work and supporting junior colleagues. Ability to lead, develop, and motivate colleagues Ability to review, challenge, and improve technical work produced by others.
Proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Teams) and comfortable with learning new applications and technology.

Desirable
Experience leading complex or multi-disciplinary tax planning engagements.
Involvement in business development or proposal preparation. Experience collaborating with other service lines.

Experience 
Relevant experience in a tax advisory role with exposure to complex tax advisory projects for Business Owners, Businesses and High Net Worth Families.
