Could you help improve the student experience at LSE?

We're looking for a current LSE student to join LSE Students' Union's Trustee Board as a Student Trustee. You do not need previous trustee, governance or board experience. What matters most is your understanding of student life at LSE, your interest in improving it, and your willingness to contribute to important decisions about the future of your Students' Union.

As a Student Trustee, you will help ensure that student perspectives remain at the heart of LSESU's decision-making and future direction.

LSE Students' Union (LSESU) exists to help LSE students make the most of all the life-changing experiences open to them during their time at university.

We provide brilliant social experiences to help students make friends and find their people, a voice in LSE's decisions that affect their education, and support for those students who need it most.

Like all charities, LSESU needs effective governance to ensure it remains accountable, financially sustainable and focused on its purpose.

The Trustee Board oversees the strategy, finances, governance, risk management and long-term sustainability of the Students' Union. It includes Sabbatical Officer Trustees, Student Trustees and Lay Trustees.

Lay Trustees bring professional expertise from outside the organisation. Student Trustees help ensure that student experiences, priorities and concerns are reflected in important decisions about the future of LSESU.

Being a Trustee is a voluntary and unpaid role.

It involves attending four Trustee Board meetings each year, plus preparation time before each meeting. Trustees also sit on one or more Board subcommittees. These are:

· Finance, Audit and Risk

· Safeguarding

· People and Culture

Each subcommittee normally meets three times per year. The overall commitment is approximately four hours per month.

Trustees do not represent a particular department, club, society or campaign. Instead, they act in the long-term best interests of LSESU as a charity, while ensuring that decision-making remains informed by the needs and experiences of students.

We are looking for students who care about making LSE a better experience for current and future students. We are interested in students who:

· have a good understanding of student life at LSE;

· are interested in improving the student experience;

· can work collaboratively with others;

· are willing to ask questions and contribute to discussions;

· are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion; and

· can prepare for meetings and maintain confidentiality.

You will gain experience of governance, strategy, finance and leadership while working alongside experienced Lay Trustees and senior staff. Full induction and training are provided, and the role offers valuable experience that can strengthen your CV and support your future career development.

We know that better decisions are made when different experiences and perspectives are represented around the Board table.

Student Trustees are elected through a cross-campus ballot.

Applications are first considered by LSESU's Appointments Committee, which will determine which applicants can proceed as candidates in the Autumn Term elections.

· Candidate training and notification: 7 October

· Campaigning begins: 12 October

· Voting: 14-15 October
