Job Description

The Board of Trustees is responsible for overseeing the Highlands & Islands Association (HISA).
 
The members make sure that HISA follows the rules of being a charity and works for the benefit of its members. Student Trustees are part of the Board to ensure that HISA focuses on its members and brings their own experiences and knowledge.

To become a Student Trustee, you need to be a current student at the University of the Highlands and Islands.
 
The maximum time expectation is to spend an average of one day per month on the role which includes the following:
 
1. Attending four quarterly Board meetings.
2. Attending other sub-committee meetings.
3. Preparation (reading) time prior to those meetings.

Student Trustees are appointed for 2 years and can serve up to 2 terms (maximum of four years). The position is voluntary, but expenses for attending meetings are covered.

Key Responsibilities
 
1. Make sure HISA follows its rules, charity law, company law, and other relevant laws.

2. Develop a clear plan and goals that meet the needs of HISA's members and work towards achieving them.

3. Delegate authority when necessary and ensure it is followed.

4. Represent and protect the reputation and values of HISA.

5. Ensure the organisation's long-term financial stability.

6. Support the Chief Executive Officer and staff in managing HISA's assets and using them for the agreed goals.

7. Provide feedback and support to the Chief Executive Officer, including performance evaluations.

8. Contribute actively to the Board by sharing knowledge and experiences as a UHI student to help make good decisions.

9. Complete the required training and personal development for the role. 

10. Disclose any conflicts of interest that may arise.

11. Follow all relevant Association policies, especially those related to staff and safety.
