As the Sport & Recreation Manager, the successful applicant will help oversee all aspects of the teams’ operations; from the recruitment and management of staff to regular finance and data processing and report writing. The right candidate must have excellent attention to detail, a wide knowledge of Sports and Recreation programmes, particularly in the HE sector, previous management experience and the ability to communicate clearly with all manner of people – from students to colleagues, contractors and more.
JOB PURPOSE
- To manage and lead the delivery and development of LSESU’s Sport and Recreational offer to ensure it is inclusive and accessible to LSE’s diverse membership
- To be responsible for the day-to-day operations and performance of LSESU’s Sport and Recreation facilities and provision on campus to increase engagement and raise the profile of sport and physical activity at LSE.
- Responsible for the department’s operational planning, and involvement in delivering the Union’s strategic aims
- To ensure student community focused results are delivered through exceptional customer service to LSE’s diverse membership whilst ensuring safe and effective working practices are in place
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leading service delivery
● To be responsible for the performance and day-to-day operations of the Sport and Recreation department including the Marshall Building facilities, Gym, Athletics Union Executive, Sports Clubs and the physical wellbeing programme
● Lead the department’s operational planning, and involvement in delivering the Union’s strategic aims by developing and continuously improving service delivery
● Lead on identifying key financial indicators and critical success factors ensuring operations plans are achieved and budget targets are met and exceeded
● To analyse and identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in provision and lead the implementation of improvements, developing robust operational plans
● To be responsible for the legal compliance including health and safety, security, and service standards in line with industry best practice in all Sport and Recreation areas
● Responsible for any contractual arrangements relating to the Sport and Recreation area
● To deliver a customer service focussed culture and ensure that all Sports and Recreation services are relevant to LSE’s wide and diverse membership
● To be responsible for asset management of all stock and sports equipment, including stock checks and monitoring of levels
● Lead on communication with key LSE stakeholders, including LSE Estates, for daily operational procedures
● To be responsible for the coordination of regular marketing and promotions for all Sport and Recreation areas
● Lead on developing value-adding sport, fitness or wellbeing services and events to engage new and hard-to-reach participants
● To be responsible for and delegate as appropriate financial administration including daily reconciliation and invoicing
● Oversee the support provided to AU Executive officers and provide support as necessary to the Activities Development Officer
● To be primary contact for emergency call outs for the gym
● Be competent and confident in the use of all fitness equipment ensuring appropriate training with associated records management is provided
● Liaise with other teams and teams across LSESU to ensure the trading components run efficiently and smoothly whilst reviewing the services against objectives, contributing to the strategic direction of the Student Communities service
● To liaise with suppliers on a day-to-day basis to ensure their and our commitments are delivered.

● To ensure physical areas of responsibility are organised and kept to a high standard of cleanliness
Quality, impact & resources
● Ensure performance management of the teams’ strategic aims and enablers
● Ensure the allocation of the teams’ staffing and resources to improve quality, performance, and impact
● Set challenging targets to ensure efficient, effective, and impactful use of resources
● Report on the performance of the department to Chief Executive, and members, trustees and stakeholders
● Manage and update regulations and procedures relating to the Sport and Recreation team
● Budget and financial development and management relating to the Sport and Recreation team
Management
● Arrange, chair, and keep a record of management and all staff meetings within the Sport and Recreation team – including performance reviews, appraisals, and investigation
● Manage the teams’ attendance at relevant events and conferences
● Manage the team members’ learning and development
● Lead and motivate the Sport and Recreation team in the delivery of the operational and financial strategy
● Recruit people with Union-compatible behaviours and values and ensure that they are given access to training from induction through to any specialist training required to do the job to the highest standard
● Responsible for the timely completion of student staff payroll
● To ensure health and safety is proactively managed
General duties
● A condition of employment is that all staff are expected to assist in key events throughout the year e.g., Fresher’s and welcome festivals and any other key event, including elections, if necessary
● Support Sabbatical Officer priorities and the implementation of Student Member Motions
Any other tasks that would be deemed suitable within this role as directed by line manager

Experience
- Experience of successfully managing and operating a Sport, Fitness or Recreational facility
- Experience of and managing a team in a complex environment with fluctuating demands, targets and priorities
- Managing delivery of a frontline service including outlet management, financial procedures and complaint handling
- Developing, managing and reporting on the progress of a function in need of continuous innovation and development
- Proven record of successful financial management, management of budgets, interpretation of complex financial information and business planning, and proven commercial acumen
