This is an ideal role for an experienced engineer with an advanced and wide ranging knowledge of manufacturing techniques, materials, design best practices and mechanical calculation and simulation. The successful candidate will take ownership of complex design projects and product developments, within a small team in a growing department led by a forward-looking Research and Development Manager.
Key Tasks/Duties of this role:
- Managing complex end to end design projects, working closely with other disciplines including electronics, mechatronics and physics
- Coordinating and contributing to the design of large, complex assemblies optimised for manufacture and assembly, for customers worldwide
- Mechanical calculations and FEA simulation of structural/load bearing components, and developing this function within the team
- Lead both customer-facing and internal design reviews for components and systems under your responsibility
- Client/sales team liaison to identify design requirements
- Coordinating and compiling detailed engineering/manufacturing drawings with BOMs
- Produce standard operating procedures to detail manufacturing and assembly methods
- Produce technical documents, reports and presentations for internal and external use
- Providing technical support to Sales, Production and Install teams as required
- Critical and assembly review of design work carried out by other members of the team
- Contributing to the development and training of junior and intermediate team members
Essential skills/Experience:
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience working in a mechanical design role
- Hold a relevant engineering degree in the field of mechanical/design engineering or transferable qualification
- Full lifecycle design experience – concept design, CAD modelling, FMEA, detailed engineering drawings, DFMEA, as well as maintenance and design improvement considerations
- Experience leading complex projects, co-ordinating and prioritising multiple work streams with a proven record of delivering on time and in budget
- Strong experience using 3D CAD software (Ideally Autodesk Inventor or Solidworks)
- Experienced in design for manufacture, with a rounded knowledge of a range of manufacturing methods (sheet metal and precision machining particularly advantageous)
- Comprehensive professional experience performing complex theoretical calculations and FEA simulations
- Experienced in reviewing and approving designs and drawings for release (including strong knowledge of GD&T)
- Experience of change management in the form of ECR
- Experience of tolerance analysis including manufactured parts and assembly tolerance stack up
- Experience with use of ERP or MRP systems i.e.: SAGE, Oracle, Progress Plus
- Experienced in documenting system requirements and verification methods
- Proficient IT skills with strong knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Desirable Skills
- Understanding of compliance such as CE marking
- Experience working with parametric modelling techniques and multibody parts
- Experience using Autodesk Vault
- Lean manufacturing experience i.e. 5S, Six Sigma or similar
- Experience with continuous improvement systems and techniques
- Experience in the effects of heat treatment of metals, specifically associated with geometric distortion following annealing processes
