Role Purpose:
The Senior Build Technician will provide advanced hands-on technical expertise in the assembly, integration, testing and commissioning of prototype, development and early production products. Working closely with the Lead Manufacturing Technician and Manufacturing Director, the role will support the development of manufacturing processes, tooling, equipment and working practices required to establish a world-class manufacturing capability. The role will undertake complex build, test and fault-finding activities on products incorporating hazardous voltage electrical systems and energy storage technologies, while supporting the successful introduction of new products and manufacturing methods. As an experienced practitioner, the Senior Build Technician will help maintain high standards of safety, quality and workmanship, provide technical guidance to colleagues, and contribute to continuous improvement across manufacturing operations.

Key Responsibilities:
Manufacturing Operations
  •  Lead assembly, integration and testing activities in accordance with manufacturing documentation, engineering requirements and quality standards. 
  • Support prototype, development and industrialisation build programmes. 
  • Maintain accurate production records, test documentation and traceability requirements. 
  • Ensure manufacturing activities are carried out safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards. 
  • Support material handling, inventory activities and production readiness tasks. 
Technical Expertise & Support 
  • Act as a subject matter expert for manufacturing assembly and test activities. 
  • Provide practical technical guidance and coaching to Build Technicians. 
  • Support the introduction of new products, processes, tooling and equipment. 
  • Assist with process development and optimisation activities.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing, assembly and test issues to minimise disruption and support delivery objectives. 
  • Support evaluation and implementation of process improvements and lessons learned. 
Manufacturing Capability 
  • Support facility setup, manufacturing development and production readiness activities. 
  • Assist with equipment installation, commissioning and validation activities.
  • Contribute to the development of work instructions, standard operating procedures and manufacturing documentation. 
  • Support Design for Manufacture and Design for Assembly reviews with Engineering. 
  • Assist in the development of scalable manufacturing methods and best practices. 
Assembly & Testing 
  • Assemble, integrate and test products incorporating hazardous voltage electrical systems to a high standard of workmanship. 
  • Follow defined hazardous voltage procedures, permits and safe systems of work. 
  • Verify products are electrically safe before progression through manufacturing stages. 
  • Support safe energisation, de-energisation and isolation activities. 
  • Ensure completion of required safety and traceability documentation associated with high-voltage products 
  • Perform manufacturing test activities including electrical, functional and verification testing. 
  • Identify, investigate and resolve build and test issues. 
  • Ensure all products meet defined acceptance criteria before progression to the next manufacturing stage. 
  • Support Engineering teams with the preparation of prototype and development units, including the installation of instrumentation, sensors and specialised test equipment required for product validation and characterisation activities.
  • Develop methods and work instructions for repeatable installation of instrumentation. 
Quality & Continuous Improvement
  • Support development and continual improvement of hazardous voltage working practices. 
  • Provide technical support during HV testing, fault-finding and commissioning activities. 
  • Assist with investigation of electrical safety incidents, near misses and process improvements. 
  • Support training and coaching of team members in safe HV working practices 
  • Perform in-process and final inspections as required. 
  • Support root cause investigations and corrective actions. 
  • Raise and support resolution of non-conformances. 
  • Assist with PFMEA, control plans and process control activities. 
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, quality, safety and productivity. 
  • Support implementation of Lean Manufacturing and 5S principles.
Safety & Compliance 
  • Demonstrate exemplary compliance with hazardous voltage safety requirements and safe systems of work. 
  • Support implementation and continual improvement of electrically safe working practices. 
  • Assist with HV risk assessments, method statements and process reviews. 
  • Verify readiness of equipment, tooling and work areas for HV activities. 
  • Promote a strong safety culture through coaching, leadership and personal example 
  • Ensure correct use of PPE, tooling and test equipment. 
  • Promote a strong safety culture through positive behaviours and adherence to procedures. 
  • Support emergency preparedness and incident response activities where required. 
Equipment & Facility Support 
  • Maintain equipment, tools and fixtures in a safe and operational condition. 
  • Support calibration and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Assist with commissioning and validation of equipment and manufacturing workstations. 
  • Maintain workplace organisation and housekeeping standards.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills Required:
  • HNC/HND, apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Manufacturing or a related discipline. 
  • Minimum 5 years' experience within manufacturing, engineering, automotive, aerospace, defence, electronics, energy storage or other high-reliability industries. 
  • Experience working on products incorporating hazardous voltage electrical systems. 
  • Understanding of electrical isolation, lock-off procedures and electrically safe working practices. 
  • Experience supporting electrical testing, fault-finding or commissioning activities. 
  •  Awareness of risks associated with lithium-ion batteries and stored electrical energy 
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, assembly instructions and Bills of Materials. 
  • Strong practical engineering skills and attention to detail. 
  • Good communication and organisational skills. 
  • Competent in Microsoft Office and manufacturing documentation systems.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills Preferred:
  • Experience supporting the establishment of a new manufacturing capability or production facility. 
  • Experience with electrical integration, testing or commissioning activities. 
  • Experience supporting equipment commissioning and process validation. 
  • Knowledge of quality management systems and controlled manufacturing environments. 
  • Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma or continuous improvement training. 
  • Experience within battery, defence, marine, industrial, automotive or specialist vehicle sectors.

 Role specific knowledge:
  • Lithium-ion cell technologies and battery pack assembly. 
  • Hazardous voltage safety principles and safe systems of work. 
  • Electrical isolation and lock-off procedures. 
  • Safe use of insulated tools, PPE and test equipment. 
  • Manufacturing process control and product traceability. 
  • Quality inspection methods and non-conformance management. 
  • Root cause analysis and structured problem-solving techniques. 
  • Safe handling, storage and transport considerations for lithium-ion batteries and energy storage products. 
  • Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies.

Location and Travel:
  • You must be eligible to work in the UK and have no restrictions for world-wide travel. We are unable to offer Visa sponsorship. 
  • Working hours are 09h00 to 17h00, 5 days a week, however some travel is expected, and flexible working patterns are essential to the role.
