We back capable people who take ownership, work collaboratively and care about the quality of their contribution. As we grow, we are building a business where high performance and wellbeing go hand in hand, ensuring a strong and sustainable future for all.

The Role

We're looking for a Project Engineer with hands-on experience of HV secondary systems, protection, control, SCADA and G99 to strengthen our engineering team in the North East.

You'll lead technical coordination across HV grid connection projects, connecting solar PV and battery storage (BESS) to the network. Working with the Project Manager and Design Manager, you'll take projects from detailed design through to commissioning and energisation.

This is a practical engineering role, not a pure design one. You'll take ownership of technical issues, bring the right people together: designers, suppliers, the EPC contractor and the DNO, and drive things through to resolution.

What You'll Do

Secondary Systems and Protection

  • Coordinate secondary system design for substations
  • Review protection and control philosophies, schematics, SLDs and wiring diagrams
  • Coordinate protection interfaces between the customer substation, DNO works and PV/BESS systems, including CT/VT requirements, intertripping and interface signals
  • Coordinate protection settings information and interfaces with the EPC contractor

SCADA and Communications

  • Coordinate SCADA, RTU, communications and control system requirements
  • Own the SCADA and telemetry interfaces between the customer installation, the DNO and EPC systems
  • Coordinate signal lists, I/O schedules, protocols and interface documentation with manufacturers and suppliers

G99 and Grid Compliance

  • Support the G99 connection compliance process from technical development through to completion
  • Coordinate protection, voltage control, reactive power, metering and communications requirements for grid compliance
  • Resolve technical queries raised through the G99 process
  • Pull together commissioning evidence and compliance documentation for energisation

Design Coordination and Interfaces

  • Review designs from external consultants and equipment suppliers
  • Coordinate interfaces across electrical, civil, protection, SCADA, communications and EPC designs
  • Lead technical design reviews where appropriate, and maintain technical action and interface registers
  • Raise and close out technical queries and RFIs
  • Liaise with the DNO on contestable design requirements and technical submissions
  • Spot design risks and programme dependencies early, and escalate them

Construction and Commissioning

  • Provide engineering support to the site team and respond to technical queries
  • Check installation against approved design
  • Support ITPs, commissioning documentation and red-line/as-built information
  • Support FAT, SAT, protection testing, SCADA integration and commissioning
  • Support energisation readiness and technical handover

Requirements

  • A degree, HNC/HND or equivalent in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Experience in HV electrical infrastructure, substations, grid connections or renewable energy projects
  • Practical knowledge of protection and control systems, and SCADA/RTU/communications interfaces
  • Working knowledge of ENA Engineering Recommendation G99 and UK grid connection requirements
  • Confidence reading and reviewing SLDs, schematics, protection drawings and technical specifications
  • Strong technical coordination and problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable working with designers, DNO engineers, EPC contractors and manufacturers
  • Able to work regularly from the North East and project locations

Nice to Have

  • Experience on 33 kV and/or 66 kV substations
  • ICP or DNO project experience, including with the regional DNO
  • Solar PV or BESS grid connection experience
  • Experience of numerical protection systems and protection studies/settings
  • Knowledge of IEC 61850
  • FAT, SAT and substation commissioning experience
  • Understanding of metering, CTs/VTs, intertripping and DNO telemetry requirements

Health, Safety and Compliance

At Alconex, safety is not a separate function - it is a core responsibility for everyone.

All roles are expected to:

  • Act in accordance with Alconex SHEQ policies and procedures
  • Take personal responsibility for health, safety and environmental standards
  • Challenge unsafe behaviours and conditions
  • Contribute to a zero-harm culture across the business

How We Work

We are a values-led organisation and expect our people to work with integrity, professionalism and accountability.

This means:

  • Taking ownership of outcomes, not just tasks
  • Communicating clearly and respectfully
  • Making commercially sound decisions
  • Working collaboratively across teams and disciplines
  • Continuously improving how we operate
