Job Purpose:
Sheffield Mind is looking for a Peer Support Worker to work on The Peer Support Framework that has been co-produced with Experts by Experience and members of Synergy (Sheffield Mental Health Alliance). 
The aim is to ensure that everyone in the city has access to peer support in their community. Peer Support workers will be based in each of the 15 Primary Care Networks (PCNs) in Sheffield.

This role will be based in Upper Don Valley PCN area and will cover:
-       Deepcar Medical centre
-       Oughtibridge Surgery
-       Valley Medical Centre

Bringing your lived experience, you will have the desire to support and encourage others on their individual recovery journeys. By drawing upon your own experiences of mental health challenges and services, and sharing them when appropriate, you will inspire, role model, and inform others in similar situations and support them in finding their own path to recovery.

The Peer Support Framework is a partnership between voluntary sector services in Sheffield, with the purpose and drive to deliver and embed peer support in communities across Sheffield. Building a strong foundation that peer support will grow from is important, so that all services work together collaboratively to identify gaps and opportunities. We are celebrating new-found ways of working and joining up what is already there. Integrating peer support is vital, to deliver better mental health services for the people of Sheffield.

The role will link you with a variety of key stakeholders including:
 
·         GPs (General Practitioner) and wider primary care staff
·         Local industry and businesses
·         Clients, family members and carers
·         The VCSE (voluntary) sector


Working Hours:
14 hours per week (2 days)

Main duties and Responsibilities:

As a Peer Support Worker in the voluntary sector, you will be working with individuals or small groups who require support from someone who understands. This connection may be made over the phone, by remote meeting, or face-to-face.

  •  Operate flexibly to support individuals.
  • Work collaboratively with other providers on the Peer Support Framework
  • Support individuals for a maximum period of 12 months (unless otherwise agreed on a case-by-case basis)
  • Ensure a utilisation figure of 75% (75% of your time to be spent with a client)
  • Collect required monitoring information. 
  • Listen, share, and value the people you work with.
  • Role model and provide positive examples of hope and possibility.
  • Provide practical information and signposting.
  • Show understanding, acceptance and empathy based on shared experience.
  • Help to access community facilities and resources.
  • Support individuals to develop ideas for coping strategies and problem-solving skills.
  • Help individuals identify their own hopes, dreams, and aspirations and to explore opportunities and ways to realise them.
  • Plan and deliver group support.
  • Provide guidance to, and work alongside, the Peer Supporters (volunteers)
  • Be mindful of the role carers/families play in supporting their loved one, ensuring they are signposted for support if needed.
  • Follow safeguarding and risk assessment procedures.
  • Actively participate in supervision with the Peer Support Coordinator
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development.
  • Work to Sheffield Mind policies and procedures.
  •  Actively promote and ensure good equal opportunities practice and work in an anti-oppressive manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with Sheffield Mind policies.
  • Support and contribute to the charitable and fundraising work of Sheffield Mind, as appropriate.
  • Carry out such other tasks as are required to meet the aims and objectives of the organisation and contribute to the smooth running of the service.

Person specification:
  • Personal experience of recovery from mental health challenge - Essential 
  • Experience of supporting people with mental health problems, formally or informally - Desirable
  • The desire and ability to share personal experiences of mental health and recovery to support, empower and bring hope to others, but keeping within professional boundaries - Desirable
  • The confidence to work with small groups - Desirable
  • The capacity to manage your own mental health needs - Essential 
  • An awareness of self-management resources and coping strategies - Essential 
  • An ability to empathise with others and form trusting relationships - Essential 
  • A non-judgemental approach and an ability to maintain appropriate/professional boundaries - Essential 
  • Good listening and communication skills, reliability and good time keeping - Essential 
  • Ability to demonstrate a positive, sensitive, and constructive approach to working with clients, colleagues, and professionals. - Essential 
  • Ability to take responsibility for your own self-care and willingness to utilise the support and supervision provided by the Peer Support Coordinator - Essential 
  • Ability to use IT - Essential 
  • Knowledge of the Don Upper Valey PCN area - Desirable
