What we're offering

You don't need a CV full of experience to start a career that matters. You need the right attitude, and two years.

Train across gas, water and electrical infrastructure and earn four nationally recognised qualifications and accreditations, all paid for by us. You'll finish as a fully qualified multi-utility operative, with a clear career path mapped out and colleagues who want you to win.

Many of our leaders and managers started exactly where you are now: new to the industry, in their first role, or ready for something different. Groundbreakers is how we back ambitious people to become part of the UK's energy transition.

About Groundbreakers

No suitable multi-utility qualification like this existed, so we built one. Groundbreakers combines four independently assessed qualifications and accreditations and our Personal Growth Engine into one programme:

  • Gas Network Operative Level 2: your core apprenticeship qualification, proving you can work safely and confidently on gas networks
  • EUSR SHEA: so you can work safely around live electrical infrastructure
  • CABWI Level 2 Network Construction Operations: so you understand how water mains and services are installed and maintained
  • NRSWA: so you can dig up and reinstate roads and pavements safely and legally

You'll rotate across live gas, water and electrical sites, working alongside an experienced mentor from day one.

This isn't a training scheme bolted onto a job. From day one you'll have access to our Personal Growth Engine. It starts with Career Base Camp, which builds the skills you need for your new career. When you graduate, you move into Career Ascent, our ongoing coaching and development programme. And if you want to lead, you can apply for GenEx, our pipeline for the next generation of our leaders.

What you'll do

  • Complete a 4-week induction covering site safety, tools and NRSWA streetworks
  • Train and qualify in gas network operations
  • Move into water mains, services and reinstatement work
  • Train in low-voltage electrical safety and safe isolation
  • Build your portfolio and complete your end-point assessment
  • Attend quarterly progress reviews with your mentor, us and our training provider
  • Get career planning and development coaching from month one, not just technical training

What you'll gain

  • All four qualifications and accreditations above, fully paid for, giving you a rare skill set across three utilities
  • A role on successful completion
  • A personal profile from day one, and a mentor chosen for fit, not just availability
  • A personalised career development plan built around your strengths
  • Your route into Career Ascent coaching, and the chance to apply for GenEx
  • Room to grow: we're growing from 100 to 190+ people, and Groundbreakers will be central to that

What we're looking for

  • Right to work in the UK
  • A genuine interest in hands-on, outdoor work on live infrastructure sites
  • Reliability, a willingness to learn and a team-first approach. We hire for attitude, not experience.
  • Comfortable with physical work in all weathers
  • A full or provisional UK driving licence is useful but not essential

You don't need any experience or qualifications in utilities.

Why Groundbreakers

  • A real career path: a role on completion, then Career Ascent coaching and the chance to join GenEx
  • Matched, not assigned: every apprentice gets a personal profile from day one and a mentor chosen for fit, not just availability
  • A rare skill set: four qualifications and accreditations across three utilities, all paid for by us
  • Room to grow: we're growing from 100 to 190+ people, and Groundbreakers will be central to that
