Cornish Metals is a fast-growing mining company focused on the redevelopment of South Crofty and other mining projects in Cornwall. As the Company scales its operations, we are seeking an experienced IT Manager to oversee and enhance the Company’s IT infrastructure while working closely with a Managed Service Provider (MSP) for security, compliance and IT service delivery.

The IT Manager will be responsible for maintaining and improving the Company’s IT systems and ensuring a secure and resilient infrastructure that supports its business operations. This role involves strategic planning, managing IT projects, optimising our network, ensuring robust cybersecurity, and working in partnership with our MSP, who will provide compliance advisory services for ISO 27001, UK Cyber Essentials and other security frameworks.

The successful candidate will need to feel comfortable working at a mine site location and communicate effectively with all levels of the business.

Principal responsibilities
The role is responsible for all aspects of IT at the mine site.  In broad terms, the role encompasses the following areas:

  • IT Strategy and Planning: Develop and implement a comprehensive IT strategy aligned with the organisation's business objectives, ensuring IT systems and infrastructure support future mining and processing operations and administrative functions.
  • IT Infrastructure & Networking: Oversee, design, implement and manage the Company’s IT infrastructure, including networks, servers, storage and telecommunications, ensuring stable and secure network operations across multiple sites.
  • Service management and MSP Collaboration: Select, procure and manage external MSP for IT service delivery, change management, cybersecurity, compliance with industry standards, ensuring high levels of service quality, availability and customer satisfaction.
  • Cybersecurity & Compliance: Implement security best practices, working with the MSP to achieve ISO 27001, UK Cyber Essentials and other regulatory frameworks.
  • Project Management: Lead and coordinate IT projects, including system upgrades, network enhancements and cloud migrations, ensuring timely delivery, budget adherence and quality outcomes, leveraging project management methodologies and frameworks.
  • Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity: Maintain robust backup solutions, disaster recovery planning and business continuity strategies.
  • Cloud & On-Premises IT Services: Oversee cloud platforms (Microsoft 365, Azure, AWS) and manage on-premises servers and storage.
  • Application Management: Oversee the implementation, maintenance and support of business applications, including ERP, mining software and other specialised systems.
  • Policy & Governance: Implement IT policies, procedures and documentation to enhance operational efficiency and security. Ensure IT systems, infrastructure and services comply with relevant laws, regulations and industry standards, including those related to data privacy security, and environmental sustainability
  • End-User Support & Training: Provide IT support for internal teams, ensuring users are equipped with the right tools and security awareness training.
  • Team Management: Lead, manage and develop a high-performing IT team, providing coaching, mentoring and guidance to ensure skills development and career growth.
  • Budgeting and Cost Management: Manage the IT budget, ensuring cost-effective use of resources, and identifying opportunities for cost savings and efficiency improvements.
  • Stakeholder Management: Foster strong relationships with business stakeholders, including operational teams, to ensure IT services meet business needs and expectations.

As the Company’s activity levels expand and operations become the primary focus of the business, further responsibilities will evolve over time.

Working environment
This is an on-site role based in an office, but providing IT support across construction and mining activities. Regular attendance at the South Crofty mine site during standard business hours is required.  The role will also involve movement within the site for meetings, training and project related activities.

Key relationships
The role will report to the Financial Controller, but there will be frequent interaction with the General Manager, Project Director, Chief Financial Officer and other line managers at the mine site.

External relationships will include communication with the MSP, suppliers and contractors.

Required skills and experience
The key skills and experience which are expected for this role are: 

Essential
  • Proven experience in an IT Management or Senior IT Leadership role. Minimum 8 to10 years of IT experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership or management role, preferably in mining or heavy manufacturing/industry.
  • Strong expertise in networking (LAN, WAN, VPN, VLAN, Firewalls, Wi-Fi, SD-WAN, Switching, Routing, DNS, DHCP, etc.).
  • Experience working with MSPs, particularly for security and compliance advisory.
  • Knowledge of ISO 27001, UK Cyber Essentials and IT security best practices (hands-on experience desirable).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365, Azure, Windows Server (Active Directory, Group Policies, Virtualization – Hyper-V/VMware).
  • Leadership and Management: Proven leadership and management skills, with experience in team management, budgeting, and cost management.
  • Understanding of backup and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to oversee multiple IT projects simultaneously and experience with project management methodologies and frameworks, such as Agile, Waterfall or Hybrid.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable
  • Demonstrable experience of leading initiatives to deliver sustainable IT solutions, excellence and promoting best practice;
  • Previous experience of working in a mining company with mechanised underground mining and processing facilities will be advantageous; and
  • Previous experience in the project execution phase of a mining and processing project will be advantageous.

Hours of work
This is a full-time position, requiring 37.5 hours per week, typically Monday to Friday between 8:00am and 4:00pm.  A part-time arrangement may be considered for the right candidate, with a minimum commitment of 30 hours.  The role may occasionally require availability outside of standard working hours to support events or address critical IT needs.
