https://www.operalimited.com/ This role within Opera sits at the intersection of strategic technology exploration and practical delivery, directly supporting Opera Group’s long-term ambition to become a digital-first, AI-enabled organisation.
This is a hands-on engineering role for a developer who enjoys pushing boundaries as much as shaping production-grade solutions. Not just writing code but reimagining how work is done - exploring what’s possible with modern software, data platforms, and AI, and then turning the best ideas into real, secure, and scalable systems.
The successful candidate will work across our core platforms and data layer, developing new tools, prototypes, automations, and AI-enabled capabilities that improve quality, speed, and control. This role blends software engineering, data engineering, and product thinking within a regulated financial services environment, where governance, security, and reliability matter.
This is an ideal role for someone who is a strong engineer and a strong communicator, who thrives on variety - equally comfortable using and building APIs, experimenting with LLMs, improving data pipelines, and presenting ideas and outcomes to senior stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
Build New Systems, Tools & Automations
• Design and develop new internal applications, workflow automations, and system enhancements to improve operational efficiency and reduce manual work.
• Build secure services, APIs, and integrations that connect business systems and enable streamlined workflows.
• Rapidly prototype solutions, validate them with users, and then harden them into reliable, scalable products.
Systems Integration & Workflow Design
• Build and maintain integrations between SaaS systems and other emerging tools.
• Collaborate with operational teams to understand how work happens today, identify bottlenecks, and redesign processes for the future.
• Promote a “systems mindset” - treating workflows as things we can model, simplify, and continuously improve.
Leverage AI to Enhance Capability
• Explore and implement practical AI solutions across workflows and systems.
• Integrate AI into workflows responsibly, ensuring traceability, validation, and appropriate controls.
• Help shape how the business adopts AI in a way that is safe, compliant, and genuinely useful.
Work with Data as a Foundation
• Extend and maintain the data layer / warehouse that enables clean, governed data exchange across systems.
• Build and enhance data pipelines and transformations (Microsoft Fabric / Spark / SQL / Python).
• Support robust data modelling, validation frameworks, and monitoring to improve reliability and trust.
Governance, Documentation & Operational Excellence
• Ensure everything is built with security, auditability, and regulatory expectations in mind.
• Follow best practice development and deployment processes (DevOps, testing, documentation).
• Produce high-quality documentation and handover materials to support continuity and adoption.
Personal Attributes
We are looking for someone who is:
• Personable and collaborative - able to build strong working relationships across teams and communicate clearly with non-technical stakeholders.
• A builder and a problem-solver - someone who enjoys shaping solutions and iterating quickly.
• Naturally curious - enthusiastic about new tools, methods, and emerging technology.
• Forward-thinking and adaptable - embraces change and helps others navigate it.
• Self-directed and accountable - able to work independently and take ownership end-to-end.
• Comfortable in a regulated environment - appreciates the need for strong controls, security, and documentation.
Qualifications & Expertise (Essential)
• Strong coding skills in Python (and ideally TypeScript/JavaScript or similar for web/API development).
• Experience working with APIs, system integrations, and automation.
• Experience with SQL, data modelling, and working with structured data.
• Familiarity with modern data tooling (e.g., Microsoft Fabric, Spark, data warehouses, ETL/ELT).
• Understanding of software engineering best practices (version control, testing, CI/CD).
• Ability to design and implement secure systems in a professional environment.
Qualifications & Expertise (Desirable)
• Experience working with cloud-native platforms and services.
• Familiarity with containerisation and orchestration (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes) and microservices patterns.
• Familiarity with event-driven architectures (e.g. Kafka, RabbitMQ).
• Experience with vector databases (e.g. Pinecone, Chroma) and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) architectures.
• Practical experience implementing AI / LLM workflows, including evaluation, guardrails, and safe deployment practices.
• Experience with the Microsoft ecosystem (Azure, Entra ID, Power Platform, Fabric).
• Experience in financial services or other regulated environments.
• Experience building internal tools, platforms, or workflow-driven systems.
What Success Looks Like in This Role
• Innovative ideas move quickly from concept to production.
• Manual, repetitive processes are replaced with elegant, automated systems.
• AI is used thoughtfully to enhance quality, speed, and decision-making.
• System integrations improve data quality and reduce operational risk.
• Solutions are robust, secure, well-documented, and widely adopted.
