 Job Summary: We are seeking an experienced fisheries and maritime domain expert analyst who is looking to join an innovative and growing organisation using state of the art technology to protect the marine environment. This opportunity comes at an exciting time and the role will play a pivotal part in supporting and working on a variety of projects from around the world.

You will use your knowledge of fisheries operations and analytical skills in conjunction with a suite of software tools (some bespoke) to inform and produce intelligence reports and risk assessments. You will have access to a variety of information sources, including satellite vessel tracking such as AIS, VMS, and others, and satellite remote sensing data (optical and radar imagery, radiofrequency, and others). The successful candidate will use their experience to interpret the data and to provide expert recommendations in well formatted reports to enable governments and enforcement agencies to use the intelligence for fisheries management and maritime protection.  
 
In addition, you will be responsible for contributing to the production of integrated marine management reports and other assessments related to the maritime domain such as patrol support, cultural heritage protection, labour abuse amongst others.

The role is a desk-based remote working position with the possibility of travel for projects, meetings and partner engagement. Communication is an essential skill. You will need to be self driven and proactive, be able to build strong relationships internally and externally, engaging with key stakeholders from various organisations and backgrounds. 
 
Responsibilities:
  • Identify and disseminate evidence of activity at sea including illegal unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU), shipping emissions, labour abuse, collision risk and other activities. Using vessel tracking and remote sensing, including radar, optical, light sensing and radio frequency data. 
  • Analyse raw and machine-learning processed data to produce visuals, assessments and actionable recommendations. 
  • Produce daily intelligence reports, historical and current risk assessments, patrol support, research outputs and desk-based reviews which assess, detect and document suspicious activities. 
  • Identify and document requirements to enhance fisheries compliance and increase sustainability to external stakeholders, including government agencies, industry, academic institutions, funding partners and non-governmental organisation (NGOs).
  • Create well formatted and considered reports and presentations based on analysis and research, quality assure those of others, and present findings and recommendations internally and externally.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with decision makers, government officials, national and international institutions, and relevant industry groups and NGOs.
  • Support Strategic Partnerships that include project design, scoping, and costing.
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, enhancement and analysis of data sources, methods, or tools that build the team’s ability to enhance compliance 
  • Assist and support with project initiatives and business development activities as and when required.
  • Other duties as assigned, including public speaking and attendance at external workshops and meetings
 
Skills and Qualifications Essential:
  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in either fisheries, marine science, environmental or enforcement or significant equivalent relevant work experience.  
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills in English, and ideally Spanish, with the ability to communicate complex technical information to non-technical audiences. 
  • Concept development along with Proposal/Grant writing skills will be advantageous
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to synthesise large amounts of data and information, to focus on the key issues, determine appropriate intervention and identify the means to address it.
  • Critical thinking to analyse complex problems, evaluate information, and arrive at informed decisions based on data insights.
  • High attention to detail is a must, to ensure accuracy in the data analysis and to identify anomalies, and potentially spot errors in the datasets
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to remotely cultivate and maintain relationships.
  • Working as part of a diverse team, you will need collaboration skills that are essential for effectively sharing knowledge, partnering on projects and leveraging collective expertise.
  • Demonstrate ability to develop and deliver projects with a high degree of independence and autonomy.
  • Be curious and strive for continuous learning, have an enquiring mindset and a willingness to learn new tools, techniques, and technologies to stay up-to-date
  • Knowledge of commercial fishing fleets, fisheries, RFMO’s and gear types.
  • Knowledge and first hand experience analysing vessel tracks (AIS,VMS or others).
  • Strong time management, record keeping and organisational skills, the ability to prioritize tasks while working on multiple projects simultaneously to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality outputs, highlighting issues and risks as necessary
  • Proven experience using different software mapping tools such as QGIS and or arcGIS 
  • Email and Microsoft Office Software Package advanced user. Strong Word & Excel skills are essential. 
  • Adaptable and flexible in dealing with changing requirements, shifting priorities, and evolving datasets or project scopes.
  • Maintaining ethical standards when dealing with sensitive and confidential information to ensure data privacy and security
 
 Skills and Qualifications Desirable:
  • Experience with fisheries monitoring, control, and surveillance (MCS), intelligence, fisheries management, or related experience.
  • Experience with fisheries data analysis and remote sensing (satellite radar and optical imagery).
  • Demonstrable understanding of industrial fishing operations, supply chains, common fishery management tools and compliance issues and the ability to evaluate specific fisheries or regions.
  • Experience delivering capacity building and training 
  • Relevant at sea experience (commercial fishing, fisheries observer, etc). 
 
The role is:
Fully remote in the UK with occasional domestic and international travel (dependent on projects). Immediately available (allowing for successful candidates notice period).
