The Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) records archaeological objects found by the public (predominantly metal detectorists), to advance knowledge and to increase opportunities for public involvement in archaeology. This data is made available through its online database – https://finds.org.uk/database. It is a partnership project, managed by the British Museum (in England) working with national and local partners across the country. This post is part of a national team of Finds Liaison Officers (FLO’s) and Finds liaison Assistants (FLA’s) delivering the British Museums Portable Antiquities Scheme.

We are seeking a part-time Finds Liaison Officer as a job share with the existing FLO for East and West Sussex. The post is based in Barbican House in Lewes, East Sussex, and hosted by The Sussex Archaeological Society. The role will deliver the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) in East and West Sussex. This will involve responding to enquires and recording new finds made by members of the public and metal detectorists. Organising finds “surgeries” at local museums across Sussex; meeting with local metal detecting clubs, co-ordinating and managing Treasure cases, undertaking relevant research projects and arranging small-scale archaeological excavations, where appropriate.

For this role, we are looking for someone with a degree in Archaeology or considerable equivalent experience together with a broad knowledge of British archaeology and artefacts. Familiarity with artefact identification and recording is essential, with good organisational skills, good oral and written communication skills and a disciplined approach to work are also required. The successful candidate will also need to have the ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines, be confident with using databases, and ideally have experience of artefact photography and photoshop.

If you would like an informal discussion about this role, please feel free to contact Jane Clark (Sussex FLO), Monday to Wednesday on 07936 588218 or 01273 405731.
