The role
 
Reporting to the Deputy editor, our Team leads are responsible for the quality and timely publishing of high-quality content for the subjects within their team - in this team those subjects are Computing, D&T and Science.
Your team will include Content creators, a Content editor and publisher and a Designer. You will have autonomy over managing your team, whilst adhering to our in-house publishing processes and style. You will draw upon your experience to ensure that content created by your team is pedagogically sound and inspirational, yet achievable.
 
To succeed in the role you will need to be quick to pick up the required digital publishing and writing skills and not be afraid of new software and technology. You will receive training on using our publishing platform, our house style guide and script writing.
 
You will need to have good commercial awareness and embrace working as a member of a team with colleagues from other disciplines such as video specialists and marketers.
 

What you will do?
 
Quality and pedagogical standards
  • Ensure Kapow’s editorial and quality standards are met for all content created in your team. 
  • Ensure that Kapow’s company-wide pedagogical approach is implemented consistently across the subjects you lead.  
  • Plan your team’s work to ensure that deadlines are met.
  • Create bi-annual subject development pitches to the Editor-in-chief, Deputy Editor and the Head of curriculum. These should be aligned with the overall goals of the business. 
  • Review and critique your team’s content plans.
  • Maintain website subject pages for all subjects within your team to ensure that information (especially dates and content titles) are accurate and up to date. 

Process and delivery
  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the team and the people within it.
  • Prioritise design and content review requirements within the team, to ensure publishing deadlines are met.
  • Embed Kapow’s content production processes within your team. 
  • Plan ahead to avoid last-minute pressures on the team and wider business whilst also being able to be flexible if priorities need to change.

People management and development
  • Develop the Content creators within your team, including setting clear, measurable targets for improvement and growth, providing regular feedback and ongoing training around their area of expertise. 
  • Identifying your own training needs and career development opportunities.
  • Motivating all team members, sharing individual and team triumphs
  • Recruitment for your team and on-boarding new joiners.

Promotion, publicity and customer engagement
  • Take an open and curious approach to customer feedback, seeking to understand more and implementing any necessary changes swiftly.
  • Proactively visit schools to see your subjects being taught. 
  • Attending relevant, industry and subject-related events.  
  • Support with marketing activities.
  • Run bi-annual subject consultation boards for the subjects within your team. 


 You will have:

  • Digital educational publishing experience. 
  • Experience either teaching or working on publishing products for Computing, D&T or Science.
  • Strong pedagogical knowledge.
  • Total adherence to publishing deadlines. 
  • Sound editorial judgement over the appropriateness of content.
  • Line management experience.
  • Ability to train and develop people, identifying training needs, communicating these and working with individuals to grow them within their roles. 
  • Ability to view content from a holistic level (unit, subject and site-wide).  
  • Ability to consider the power of images, audio and video and how to use these within an appropriate way within our content.
  • Commercial awareness, particularly around subscription renewal rates and product development. 
  • Ability to work with and respect people of different skills and professional backgrounds
  • Understanding of and awareness of rights issues.
  • Calm under pressure, but work to avoid bottlenecks and crises from arising through application of the content review process.
