Are you looking for an ad hoc afternoon / evening role that makes a difference? Do you have hospitality experience and/or a passion for food and want to do something different? Support a great cause, meet amazing people and eat incredible food from around the world at Migrateful! 
We are looking for 3 hands-on facilitators who can support our cookery sessions on an ad hoc basis with availability to cover anything from 2 sessions per month to 3 sessions per week, depending on demand. 

About the role: 
Before the class, the Facilitator will familiarise themselves with class plans, recipes and the venue. They’ll ensure all ingredients required for the class have been purchased, and together with the volunteers, they will set up the room and prepare all the items and ingredients needed. During the Cookery Class, the facilitator manages the volunteers, and plays the important role of connecting guest and the chef by supporting the chef to share stories of their culture and journey.

Most importantly, the role is about ensuring that the classes run smoothly, safely and that participants, volunteers and chefs have a fun, enjoyable experience! 

Full training on how to facilitate a Migrateful Cookery Class and Cookery Demonstration will be provided.

Responsibilities:
  • Being on call to facilitate classes and demonstrations (day dependent on location but including evenings & weekends, see above).
  • Familiarising yourself with class plans, recipes and venue guides ahead of class
  • Liaising with chefs and volunteers ahead of class (e.g. on timings, ingredients, talking points)
  • Arriving on time 
  • Buying ingredients for classes on the day 
  • Setting up welcome spaces, cooking stations and equipment for the class
  •  Welcoming participants and creating a warm, friendly atmosphere
  • Introducing and explaining Migrateful to participants
  • Delivering a Health & Safety and Allergen briefing before each class starts
  • Assisting with the basics of food and kitchen safety and food preparation
  • Supporting the chef throughout the class and managing the volunteers
  • Clearing up the space and leaving the venue clean and tidy
  • Cleaning the equipment and cutlery/crockery so it is ready to use for the next class
  • Provide regular feedback after each class including updates to recipes and feedback on chefs, volunteers and the class in general to aid the chef’s development
  • Responding promptly to requests from the Cookery Class Coordinator for you to facilitate at classes

What we are looking for in a candidate: 

Essential criteria

  • Able to work shifts 10:45am - 4pm weekdays/weekends  and 4:45pm - 10:30pm weekdays/weekends
  • Comfortable manual handling and lifting heavy loads (equipment boxes, heavy shopping, tables & chairs)
  • Hospitality and/or culinary experience 
  • Ability to take initiative, be flexible and think creatively
  • Good at troubleshooting (e.g. health & safety, missing ingredients)
  • A people-person, comfortable public speaking and hosting
  • Has strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to deal with, and have empathy for a diverse range of people including vulnerable groups
  • Deals well with pressure and stays calm in stressful situations
  • Enthusiasm, energy and a positive attitude
  • Has the right to work and able to be self-employed
  • Lives in London (for London role) / Lives in Brighton (for Brighton role) 
  • Supports Migrateful’s mission

Desirable
  • Food Safety and Hygiene Level 2 Qualification
  • First Aid Training
  • DBS checked 
  • Experience of working with vulnerable adults, in particular from refugee backgrounds
  • Experience of cookery classes
