Main duties and responsibilities 
  • Managing the company and stage-management team, including overseeing and supporting the Assistant Stage Manager and delegating duties as appropriate.
  • Acting on book throughout rehearsals and performances, maintaining an up-to-date script and communicating all changes and cuts to the relevant teams.
  • Running technical rehearsals and coordinating the transition into previews and the performance run.
  • Managing company schedules and working hours, minimising overtime and submitting accurate weekly timesheets.
  • Writing and distributing rehearsal notes and show reports to the relevant creative, production and producing teams.
  • Liaising with the creative and production teams, venue staff and session-based creatives, including coordinating attendance within agreed budgets and contracted sessions.
  • Attending production meetings and keeping the Producers informed of any matters affecting the safe and effective delivery of the Production.
  • Supporting the maintenance of props, set and show-related equipment, and contributing to laundry duties in rotation with the Assistant Stage Manager where required.
  • Supporting the Production’s health and safety, access and Theatre Green Book commitments, including scheduled access performances, press calls and post-show events where required.

This is an on-book role. The Company Stage Manager will call the show during performances and will be responsible for teaching the Assistant Stage Manager the book after Press Night in preparation for emergency cover, if required.

This is a senior stage-management role. Applicants should have previous professional experience leading a company, working with actors and creative teams, and calling performances.

Person specification
  • Previous professional experience as a Company Stage Manager or Deputy Stage Manager.
  • Experience of being on book and calling live performances.
  • Experience of managing a company and leading or supervising a stage-management team.
  • Experience of running technical rehearsals and supporting a production through previews and a performance run.
  • A strong understanding of theatre production processes, scheduling, working hours and safe backstage practices.
  • Experience of maintaining an accurate prompt copy and producing clear rehearsal notes, show reports and company paperwork.
  • Strong leadership, organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • A collaborative, proactive and calm approach, with the ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively under pressure.
  • A high degree of tact, discretion and confidentiality.

Desirable: 

Experience of working on new writing and access performances is desirable but not essential.
