Purpose & Overview: 
Community Organisers exist to build student power by supporting students to identify shared concerns, develop leadership and take action to create meaningful change within the University and wider community.  

Your focus will be on building strong relationships with students, the Union and local organisations. You’ll listen and empower others to have their voice heard. This role isn’t about doing things for people, but about equipping people with the knowledge, connections and resources they need to influence decision making, run campaigns and make change.  

In particular, you’ll work with underrepresented or marginalised communities who might not otherwise have the opportunity to shape the world around them. 

Key Information 
Community Organisers will work closely with staff in the Union’s membership team. You will be responsible to the Voice & Insight Manager.  

Your role will have some office-time at any of our Derby campuses. However, your main working location will be varied dependent on what you are working on. This could mean that you work: 

  • At any of our University of Derby campuses  
  • In halls or other student accommodation  
  • In cafes, libraries or study areas 
  • In local community organisations 
  • Places of worship or local offices 
Due to the nature of this role, this role will have minimal opportunity to work from home.  

Key Responsibilities:  
 
  • Building relationships with students through outreach, one-to-one conversations and regular presence where students are  
  • Identifying emerging student issues and supporting students to develop shared priorities  
  • Supporting the organisation and development of campaigns and initiatives to improve student experience  
  • Developing networks and connections of student leaders and community groups across campuses and the city  
  • Facilitate meetings, listening activities and workshops to better understand develop Student Voice 
  • Work with executive officers and other student leaders to strengthen community and student organising at Derby  
  • Plan and deliver community building-events throughout the academic year, including freshers  
  • Signpost and support students to access resource from the Union and wider community  
  • Collaborate with Students’ Union and University staff  
  • Outreach to build and develop relationships with new organisations that the Union and University have not yet partnered with

As part of the interview process, candidates will be able to discuss which areas of activism and advocacy they are best suited to them, so the role can best suit them. 

We are hiring multiple candidates for the role of community organiser so we can better reflect the diversity of the student body. 

If successful, paid training will occur over the Summer to prepare you for the role. The contract for the role will commence September 2026 and last the academic year 2026/27, subject to a successful probation. 

Being able to take on the role will be subject to an ability to attend mandatory training days over summer. One of these confirmed dates is July 13th – other dates will be confirmed as soon as possible.
