About us:
Magnetic Shields Limited (MSL) is a family-run industry leader in the design and manufacture of magnetically shielded products and rooms. Our brand-new factory, equipped with high-power fibre cutting laser technology and full stock automation, has more than doubled our production capacity. As we expand into increasingly advanced technical sectors, we are seeking an experienced CMM Inspector to strengthen our Quality & Inspection team.
This role is ideal for a precision inspection professional from aerospace, defence, medical devices, or high-spec manufacturing who enjoys working in a technically demanding environment where accuracy, dimensional control, and engineering quality are critical.
CMM capability is central to this role — hands-on experience operating and running CMM inspection equipment is an essential requirement for new members joining the inspection team.
Main duties:
- Programme, operate and run CMM inspection equipment to verify dimensional accuracy of manufactured components.
- Carry out first-article, in-process, and final inspections of precision sheet metal and machined components.
- Interpret engineering drawings, CAD data, and GD&T requirements to ensure dimensional compliance.
- Use precision metrology equipment including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, thread gauges and optical equipment.
- Generate and maintain inspection reports, dimensional records, and quality documentation.
- Identify non-conforming components and support root cause investigation and corrective actions.
- Work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure parts meet engineering specifications and quality standards.
- Support the introduction of new components and inspection methods during product development.
- Maintain calibration and proper use of inspection equipment and measurement systems.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the quality and manufacturing teams.
- Working to ISO9001 standards
CMM inspectors are responsible for verifying product dimensions and tolerances using coordinate measuring machines while interpreting engineering drawings and documenting inspection results
About the role:
- Inspect precision components used in scientific, defence and advanced engineering applications.
- Work in a modern manufacturing facility with advanced production and inspection equipment.
- Be part of a collaborative engineering environment involving production, design and R&D teams.
- Apply high-precision inspection techniques across varied and technically challenging components.
- Permanent day shift role — no rotating shifts or night work.
- Join a growing engineering business investing heavily in facilities, automation and technology.
Essential Skills/Requirements:
- Hands-on experience operating CMM machines (essential requirement).
- Strong knowledge of GD&T and dimensional inspection techniques.
- Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and CAD models.
- Experience using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers and height gauges.
- Previous experience in precision manufacturing sectors such as aerospace, defence, medical or advanced engineering.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to high quality standards.
- Experience working within ISO9001 or similar quality management systems.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
CMM inspection roles typically require the ability to interpret blueprints, apply GD&T principles, and measure parts using both automated CMM systems and manual metrology tools.
Desirable experience:
- Experience programming or modifying CMM inspection routines
- Experience working with sheet metal or precision machined components.
- Knowledge of First Article Inspection (FAI) or AS9102 documentation.
- Experience supporting process improvement and production problem-solving.
- Exposure to advanced inspection technologies such as optical or laser measurement systems.
