About Us
White Lodge enables people with disabilities, their families and carers to lead fulfilling lives. Supporting over 2,500 individuals across Surrey, we deliver specialist services for children, young people and adults through inclusive, high-quality practice.

We are now seeking a Chair of the Board of Trustees to provide leadership and guidance through the next phase of our development. This is an opportunity to shape the future of a well-established, values-led charity.

The Role
As Chair, you will ensure strong governance, accountability and effective oversight. Alongside Trustees and the Chief Executive, you will ensure the charity operates in line with its charitable purpose, legal duties and strategic ambitions.

You will champion ethical leadership, foster robust debate and ensure decisions are principled, well-governed and strategically sound.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Chairing Board meetings with a clear focus on strategy, risk and impact
  • Ensuring compliance with Charity Commission and Companies House requirements
  • Supporting Trustees to discharge their legal duties
  • Overseeing Board effectiveness, development and succession planning
  • Reviewing Board composition, skills and diversity to ensure effective governance
  • Providing constructive challenge and support to the Chief Executive
  • Ensuring oversight of financial stewardship, safeguarding, risk and performance
  • Representing White Lodge externally where appropriate

About You
You will bring:
  • Experience of charity governance or senior strategic leadership
  • Strong understanding of trustee and director duties
  • Experience overseeing risk and organisational performance
  • The ability to lead inclusive, effective discussions
  • Sound judgement, integrity and a strategic mindset
  • A genuine commitment to White Lodge’s mission

We welcome applications from individuals who bring diverse perspectives and lived experience, and who share our commitment to inclusion and belonging.

Time Commitment
This is a voluntary role. The typical time commitment includes:

  • Quarterly Trustee Board meetings (evenings; in person)
  • Annual Board Away Day / strategic planning session (full day; in person)
  • Bi-annual committee meetings; two meetings each per year for the Finance & Fundraising and People & Governance Committees (four meetings in total; evenings; online)
  • Regular liaison with the Chief Executive and Committee Chairs (hybrid)
  • Preparation time and occasional external representation (hybrid)

Ongoing Recruitment
We may interview suitable candidates as applications are received. Closing dates may be extended where necessary, and the role may close early if the right candidate is appointed. Early applications are therefore encouraged.

White Lodge Centre is an equal opportunities organisation. We value diversity and are strongly committed to providing equal opportunities for all. We believe that the more inclusive our environments are, the better our governance and impact will be.
