Purpose of the role
Working closely with the Company Stage Manager, the Assistant Stage Manager will help support the effective running of rehearsals and performances.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Preparing and resetting the rehearsal room, stage, props and backstage areas.
- Sourcing, making, adapting and maintaining props within the agreed budget.
- Supporting the cast during rehearsals and performances, including dressing and performer preparation where required.
- Undertaking routine laundry and costume-maintenance duties.
- Running the agreed ASM performance track, including props, scene changes and resets.
- Maintaining clear production paperwork, including props lists, presets, running lists and handover notes.
- Attending production meetings as required.
- Supporting the Production’s health and safety, access and Theatre Green Book commitments.
- Familiarising yourself with the prompt copy after Press Night, if requested. Any requirement to cover the book will be discussed and agreed separately.
The Bush Theatre does not have an in-house Wardrobe Team, so this role includes routine laundry, dressing and costume-maintenance responsibilities. Additional specialist wardrobe support will be arranged where required.
Person specification
- Previous professional stage-management experience.
- Experience of working through a professional rehearsal process and performance run.
- Experience of sourcing, making and maintaining props.
- Confidence working backstage during live performances.
- A good understanding of theatre production processes and safe backstage working practices.
- Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
- A collaborative, proactive and calm approach.
- A high degree of tact, discretion and confidentiality.
- A commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression, sustainability and the values of the Bush Theatre.
This is not an entry-level role. Applicants should have previous professional experience working with actors, creative teams and production departments.
Desirable:
Experience of working on new writing is desirable but not essential.
