What will you be doing?
Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that Balance achieves its core purpose. They oversee the governance and administration of the charity, ensure we have a clear strategy, and that our work and goals remain in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the executive team to enable Balance to grow and thrive.
Board members have a collective responsibility — trustees always act as a group, and not as individuals.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our Board.
Personal skills and qualities (all trustees):
- Willingness and ability to understand and accept the responsibilities and liabilities of a trustee, and to act in the best interests of the organisation.
- Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement, and work effectively as a board member.
- Effective communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussion.
- A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
- Enthusiasm for our vision and mission.
- Commitment to Nolan's seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
Specialist skills and experience for this role:
- A minimum of three years' experience in communications, marketing, PR, digital or brand — ideally at a senior or strategic level.
We would particularly welcome experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Campaigning
- Copywriting / journalism
- Event management
- Marketing strategy
- Public relations
- Social media marketing
- Experience of raising an organisation's profile and reaching new audiences, whether in the corporate, public or voluntary sector.
- An understanding of how strong communications support fundraising, recruitment and community engagement.
What difference will you make?
Specialist focus: communications and marketing
In addition to general duties, this role brings specialist expertise to the Board. We are particularly looking for someone who can:
- Provide strategic oversight and leadership on Balance's communications, marketing and public profile at Board level.
- Support and challenge the executive team on promotional strategy, brand, and how Balance reaches and engages its communities, funders and partners.
- Champion the charity's story — helping raise awareness of our services, impact and volunteering opportunities.
- Advise on digital presence, campaigns, media, and stakeholder engagement, and help identify opportunities to strengthen Balance's reach.
Before you apply
Please tell us about your relevant experience and why you would like to join our Board. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds. For this role we are particularly looking for a minimum of three years' experience in communications, marketing, PR, digital or brand, and the ability to bring that expertise to a small charity's Board.
Our process: successful applicants are invited to an informal interview with our CEO and Volunteer Lead (in person or remotely), followed by one or two meetings with our Board of Trustees before an offer is made.
