Paralegal – Family Team

Location: Merseyside/Cheshire

As part of our continued growth, Bell Lamb & Joynson are looking for a talented and ambitious individual to join our growing Family team. The ideal candidate will provide legal and administrative support to the Family Law team, assisting with a range of matters including divorce, financial remedy, child arrangements, and domestic abuse cases. The role involves working closely with solicitors, clients, and external agencies to ensure effective case management and a high standard of client care.
 
 The role is initially office‑based, moving to a hybrid arrangement on completion of probation. The successful candidate will be hands‑on and collaborative, confident in managing their own workload, and comfortable balancing high standards of client care with the pace and demands of a busy Family team. Strong communication skills are essential, along with the ability to manage expectations, prioritise effectively, and support clients with empathy and professionalism throughout often sensitive and emotionally challenging matters.

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Case Support: Assist solicitors in handling a caseload of family matters, including divorce, private law children matters, financial disputes, and cohabitation issues.
  • Document Preparation: Draft legal documents such as client care letters, witness statements, court forms, and consent orders.
  • File Management: Open and close files in line with compliance procedures; maintain accurate and up-to-date records.
  • Client Liaison: Communicate professionally with clients, both in person and over the phone, to update on case progress and gather information.
  • Court Work: Assist in preparing bundles for court and liaise with court staff and counsel as necessary.
  • Legal Research: Conduct legal research to support casework and prepare briefing notes or chronologies.
  • Administrative Tasks: Manage diaries, book appointments, schedule meetings, and handle incoming correspondence.
  • Compliance: Ensure all work complies with the firm’s risk management procedures, confidentiality policies, and SRA guidelines.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Excellent communication and client care skills.
  • Ability to manage a busy workload with minimal supervision.
  • High attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
  • Competence in using Microsoft Office and legal case management systems.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience as a paralegal in a family law setting.
  • Strong understanding of family law processes and procedures.
  • Completion of a law degree or CILEx qualification.
  • Experience in publicly funded (Legal Aid) family work.
  • Familiarity with legal aid applications and CCMS portal,
