Senior Marine Ecologist / Project Manager
Salary £ 42092
Falkland Islands
Vacancy listed 01/07/2026

Details

The South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute (SAERI) is seeking an experienced Senior Marine Ecologist / Project Manager to lead delivery of an exciting Darwin Plus funded project focused on improving understanding and management of Falkland Islands Marine Managed Areas (MMAs).

The Falkland Islands recently designated a network of Marine Managed Areas covering approximately 15.3% of Falkland Islands waters. Despite substantial progress through Marine Spatial Planning and previous research programmes, approximately 67% of the inshore MMA network between 20–100 m depth remains poorly understood.

This project will address this knowledge gap through the collection and analysis of multibeam echosounder (MBES), backscatter and benthic imagery data, leading to the development of habitat maps, an Environmental Baseline Description, and Research and Monitoring Plans to support long-term marine conservation and management.

The successful candidate will work closely with government, research partners and stakeholders and will play a key role in translating scientific evidence into practical management outcomes.

The successful candidate will lead all aspects of project delivery from July 2026 to December 2028.

Main Accountabilities
The Project Manager will play a leading role in delivering a nationally significant marine research programme and generating the evidence required to support long-term management of the Falkland Islands Marine Managed Area (MMA) network. The postholder will be responsible for:

  • Delivering the Darwin Plus project to agreed objectives, timescales and budgets, ensuring high standards of project management, reporting and governance.
  • Planning and leading marine field surveys that deliver high-quality environmental and habitat data from across the MMA network.
  • Developing and managing environmental datasets, spatial products and analytical outputs that improve understanding of marine habitats and ecological processes.
  • Producing the Environmental Baseline Description for the MMA network by integrating new survey data with existing information and scientific evidence.
  • Developing practical, evidence-based research and monitoring plans that support long-term adaptive management of the MMA network.
  • Building and maintaining effective relationships with government, project partners and stakeholders to ensure project outputs are relevant, accessible and inform policy and management.
  • Communicating project findings through technical reports, presentations and scientific publications, and identifying opportunities to build on project outcomes through future research and funding.
  • Contributing to the wider scientific objectives, reputation and strategic development of SAERI.

The job description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of duties. The postholder may be required to undertake other responsibilities commensurate with the role and grade of the position.
