Job Purpose:
To support SeaGrown's mission of pioneering nature-based marine recovery through offshore seaweed and shellfish cultivation. The role combines oceanography fieldwork, equipment maintenance, environmental monitoring, and laboratory analysis. You will be responsible for ensuring that scientific equipment is ready for deployment (e.g. maintained and calibrated). You will also be involved in regenerative aquaculture practices, and long-term data collection and monitoring, the postholder will contribute to positive impacts on ocean health, biodiversity recovery and sustainable food production.
Main Responsibilities:
- Conduct sampling in the intertidal and offshore marine settings, including monitoring and collection of environmental and operational data.
- Operate, maintain and calibrate environmental monitoring equipment.
- Troubleshoot scientific instruments and field sensors and procurement of new equipment.
- Assist in the deployment and recovery of oceanographic monitoring systems.
- Ensure accurate recording and management of field data. Support the planning and delivery of research and development projects.
- Perform laboratory analyses and process scientific datasets.
- Support routine hatchery operations.
- Ensure compliance with company health, safety and environmental procedures, including PPE requirements and toolbox talks.
- Promote a safe working environment for yourself and colleagues.
- Provide support across departments as required.
- Undertake other duties reasonably requested by management
Skills & Qualifications - Essential
- HNC/HND, BSc, apprenticeship, military technical training, or equivalent practical experience in marine science, environmental science, aquaculture, engineering, maritime operations or a related discipline
- Valid ENG1 medical (will be required before contract confirmed) ·
- Innovative, with strong problem-solving skills. ·
- IT literate and ability to learn new systems.
Skills & Qualifications - Desirable
- PhD or MSC degree in Marine Biology, Marine Chemistry or similar.
- Experience of offshore marine operations.
- Full Driving License
Experience - Essential
- Experience working in marine, environmental, aquaculture, maritime, offshore, engineering, military or other technical operational environments.
- Setting up and running field-based and lab-based protocols
- Experience working in a laboratory supporting marine, environmental, biological or aquaculture research.
- Experience with experimental design, implementation, and monitoring systems.
- Experience of maintaining and calibrating electronic and scientific equipment
- To efficiently manage multiple workstreams.
Experience - Desirable
- PhD or MSC degree in Marine Biology, Marine Chemistry or similar.
- Experience of offshore marine operations.
- Full Driving License
Knowledge & Understanding - Essential
- Interest in the marine environment and how SeaGrown can enhance it.
- Familiar with the Microsoft 365 suite of office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc).
- An ability to maintain and operate systems in a clean and safe way
Knowledge & Understanding - Desirable
- Knowledge of oceanographic equipment and datasets.
- Ability to use programming languages
- Ability to use GIS mapping software
- Understanding of seaweed & shellfish lifecycle and the impact that water quality and sediment can have.
