The Postal Museum (TPM) is one of the newest and most exciting museums in London. We opened in 2017 and have already established the museum as a must-visit destination with award-winning experiences. Alongside hands-on exhibitions exploring over 500 years of British social and communications history, visitors can experience a subterranean ride through the tunnels of the old Post Office Underground Railway – Mail Rail. The museum welcomes over 160,000 visitors and our online content reaches almost a million users a year. We deliver award-winning learning, access and outreach programmes and provide unique experiences including popular Tunnel Walks under the streets of London. The museum also operates a children’s play space – Sorted! – popular with young families and schools. Alongside all this we offer one of the most unique venues in London for corporate hire and filming. 
 
 
Based: The Postal Museum, Central London. Flexible and hybrid working patterns will be considered.   
Salary: £25,200 (3 days a week) 
Reports to: Senior Archivist 
Responsible for: No staff 
Contract: Fixed term, Part-time 21 hours per week exclusive of lunch breaks.  
Start date: mid September 2026 
End Date: mid September 2028

Purpose of the Job 

 
  • The Records Management Archivist provides specialist professional input to The Postal Museum’s team in particular responsibility for the promotion of records management practice and procedures throughout The Postal Museum and the postal businesses.  
  • The role also supports the Senior Archivist in their responsibilities towards professional management of the historical archive. 
 

Key Responsibilities and Duties 

 
Records Management 
  • Implement records management procedures at The Postal Museum and for Royal Mail/Post Office Ltd (POL) records where appropriate. 
  • Advise Royal Mail/POL departments and The Postal Museum staff on best practice in/ benefits of archive and records management and the implications of the Public Records Acts where appropriate. 
  • Assist the Senior Archivist/Archivist (Digital) in developing and implementing The Postal Museum strategy for the acquisition of key archival records (including digital records) across Royal Mail and POL. 
 
Access to Archives 
  • Participate in the operation of the public Archive research area on a rotational basis, providing a central information service to internal and external users and ensuring access to public records in accordance with statutory obligations. 
 
Other activities 
  • Potential to assist with appraisal process for historic file backlogs.  
  • Ensure on a rota basis that Records Centre enquiries are answered in timely fashion. 
  • Assist the Senior Archivist in professional duties as required. 
  • Ensure established archival standards and legislation are followed at all times. 
  • Champion The Postal Museum brand and act as a brand ambassador. 
  • Any other ad hoc duties as required.

Qualifications 
 
Essential criteria 
  • Post-graduate qualification in Archives & Records Management or equivalent recognised by the Archives & Records Association 
 
Desirable criteria 
  • Demonstrable commitment to continuing professional development
     
Experience 
 
Essential criteria 
  • Experience of records management 
  • Experience of working in an archive environment 
 
Desirable criteria 
  • Experience of working in a business archive 
  • Experience of providing a public service 
  • Experience of project management, or a willingness to learn 
  • Experience of archival appraisal

Working Conditions 

 
This position will require a basic DBS check based on Guidance on Security checks at TPM. A criminal record may not necessarily be a bar to placement, as any decision will be treated on its merits and individual circumstances subject to the museum’s overriding obligations to protect the children and vulnerable adults in its charge, members of the public, the safety of the museum’s staff and the Collection. The postholder will be expected to monitor and report on their work as directed by their line manager. The postholder will be expected to pick up ad hoc duties as required.  
 
The postholder will be expected to work to office guidelines on handling, health and safety, lone working, etc. as advised, taking responsibility as appropriate.
