Senior Mapping Engineer – Job Description

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mapping Engineer to join our edge autonomy team specializing in large scale high accuracy mapping using typical odometry and perception sensors.

This role focuses on maintaining existing code based and enhancing the capabilities to achieve high accuracy large scale maps. You will contribute to the full lifecycle of mapping solutions, from system architecture and data processing pipelines to map generation, validation, deployment, and continuous improvement.

You will work closely with perception, localization, and navigation teams to ensure the map stack is accurate, stable, up-to-date, and well-integrated into our autonomy system. As a senior member of the team, you will influence our technical roadmap, champion best practices, and help shape the next generation of our mapping platform.

Key Responsibilities

Mapping System Development

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable vision-based and LiDAR-based mapping pipelines.
  • Build and improve 2D/3D map representations including occupancy grids, vector maps, HD maps, semantic layers, and environment models.
  • Lead fusion of multi-sensor data (LiDAR, cameras, radar, GNSS/INS, odometry) into coherent, consistent map outputs.
  • Develop capabilities for large scale mapping such as multi session mapping.
  • Engineer mapping workflows for large-scale fleet operations, including map versioning, delta updates, and distributed map generation.
Integration with Autonomy Stack

  • Collaborate with perception and localization engineers to ensure maps support robust environmental understanding.
  • Maintain tight integration with SLAM/Localization systems to ensure stable, drift-free operation in real deployment environments.
Quality, Testing & Validation

  • Establish KPIs and evaluation frameworks for assessing map accuracy, consistency, and completeness.
Technical Leadership

  • Track and translate state-of-the-art research in mapping, SLAM, multi-modal reconstruction, semantic mapping, and large-scale environment modeling into production systems.
  • Mentor team members and contribute to best practices in mapping, data processing, and autonomy system integration.

Essential Requirements

  • MSc/PhD in Robotics, Computer Vision, Computer Science, or a related engineering field.
  • 4–5+ years of hands-on experience with mapping in autonomous systems or robotics.
  • Strong expertise in:

    • LiDAR and point-cloud processing (PCL, Open3D, custom pipelines)
  •
    • Vision-based mapping (stereo/mono reconstruction, visual SLAM)
  •
    • Multi-sensor fusion pipelines
  •
    • Building large-scale 3D maps for real-world autonomy
  •
  • Proficiency in C++ with strong experience in ROS2.
  • Solid understanding of robot kinematics, estimation, optimization approaches, geometry, and transformation management (TF2).

Desirable Skills

  • Good knowledge and experience in a range of approaches for Lidar mapping, Vision based mapping and sensor fusion.
  • Familiarity with real-time systems, distributed mapping architectures, and middleware (DDS).
  • Knowledge of semantic mapping, automated labelling, or ML-based scene understanding.

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to shape the map product for one of the UK’s leading industrial autonomy companies.
  • Work alongside experts in perception, localization, navigation, and systems engineering.
  • Exposure to live deployments in challenging real-world environments.
  • Competitive compensation including salary, benefits, and performance-based incentives.
  • A senior role with clear influence on technical direction and scalability of the autonomy stack.
