The Company
Cornish Metals is an AIM traded Company working towards re-opening the 100% owned and fully permitted South Crofty underground tin mine in Pool, Cornwall.  

In March 2025, we raised £57.4 million, anchored by the UK’s National Wealth Fund and Vision Blue Resources to advance South Crofty towards tin production once again.  Tin is essential for electronics, renewable energy, and modern technology and demand is projected to increase by 30% in the next decade.

Role purpose
To provide support and to take on some of the responsibilities of the current Management Accountant and Management Accounts Assistant, enabling them to focus on an ERP implementation project over the next 6 months. 

The role is located at the South Crofty mine site and will primarily be providing overseeing transaction entry, monthly closing, internal financial reporting and external financial reporting.

The successful candidate will need to be able to work in a small finance team and communicate effectively with technical staff who work in the same location.

 Principle responsibilities/role tasks
The role is primarily responsible for supporting the Management Accountant and Management Accounts Assistant in producing the accounting and internal and external financial reporting of the Cornish Metals group of companies. 

The ERP implementation project will have fluctuating levels of demand on the various members of the current finance team, and this role will be expected to support wherever is required.  This could range from administrative support and invoice entry into the accounting system all the way up to the review of statutory financial statements and preparation of technical accounting memos.

Duties as part of the role are expected to include, but are not limited to, the following:

Accounting and internal financial reporting
Provide support to the current finance team across the accounting and administrative process. 
  • Purchase ledger duties including invoice processing and payment runs.
  • Monthly reconciliations and management accounts.
  • Prepare monthly closing reports for management, analyse variances and follow-up on potential remedial steps.
  • Preparation of monthly consolidation and management accounts.
  • Assist in preparation of monthly finance reports for board/senior management.
  • Ensure accounting policies are maintained and implemented properly.
  • Review government returns & submissions including VAT and other ad hoc statutory/regulatory reports.

External financial reporting
  • Assist in the provision of technical accounting support and the preparation of accounting papers.
  • Assist in the preparation of the financial statements and related working papers for 6-month interim accounts and the year end.

Payroll
  • Review payroll for reasonableness and accuracy of compilation (payroll preparation is the responsibility of HR)

Tax compliance
  • Prepare tax working papers and assist in the review of tax returns for all legal entities

Working Environment 
This is an on-site role based at South Crofty mine. While mainly desk based, it will involve some/regular movement around the site, including underground, for meetings, training and project related activities.

 Key relationships
The role will report to the Management Accountant, but there will be frequent interaction with the Management Accounts Assistant, Head of Finance and CFO.

External relationships will include banks, IT providers, tax advisers and the external auditors.

Skills and experience
The successful candidate would be expected to have an accounting qualification (AAT level 4+) with all-round general accounting and tax skills.

The key skills and experience which are expected for this role are:

Essential
  • 3+ years’ experience and knowledge of accounting and financial management.
  • Ability to proactively take on responsibilities, “roll up their sleeves” and provide whatever support and assistance the existing finance team require.
  • Advanced skills in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and be comfortable taking on new software products.
  • Current driving licence, or alternative ability to efficiently undertake the duties of the role and reliably travel to site. 
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills.

Desirable
  • Experience with Sage 300, Zahara and IFS software.
  • Experience of an ERP implementation.
  • Previous experience of working in a company in the extractive, construction or industrial sectors.
  • IFRS and/or UK GAAP knowledge.
  • Understanding of payroll.
