Deputising for the Head of Construction
Aim of Post
- To assist the BTS Head of Workshop and the Deputy Head of Workshop (Carpentry) in managing the workshop and construction department effectively and efficiently in its delivery of quality sets, scenery, furniture, etc built on time and in budget.
- To Deputise and assist the BTS Head of Workshop develop and maintain a high standard of product
- To deputise and assist the BTS Head of Workshop and the Deputy Head of Workshop (Carpentry) with maintenance and safe use of all workshop equipment (loose tools, equipment and machinery within carpenters shop, steelwork shop, props shop and paint shop).
Specific Responsibilities:
Operational
- To construct, repair and modify stage sets, scenery and furniture for all Client builds, as well as all Belgrade Theatre productions, and its associated companies within approved budgets, and job schedule.
- To work with a range of materials including wood and metal, with a bias in metalwork
- To work closely with the Production and Artistic team, interpreting their requirements to realisation
- To attend as necessary, all technical and fit up periods to ensure quality construction of the sets
- To attend all staff and production meetings
- To supervise, support and motivate freelance/casual staff
- As required to Deputise for and assist the BTS Head of Workshop to promote a healthy & safe working environment in the Workshop. Complying with all relevant Health & Safety Legislation and Regulation, including following Belgrade Theatre Health & Safety policy. Follow insurance requirements ensuring in particular that the workshop areas comply and are left clean and tidy after work and that staff and all users are trained to use equipment. Being responsible for the safety and wellbeing of other members of the team.
- To assist the BPS Head of Construction in preparing risk assessments for all sets and work produced in the workshop.
- To undertake staff training as appropriate.
Financial
- As required to Deputise for and assist the BTS Head of Workshop control and report on agreed budgets, both financial and staffing, using the Theatre’s appropriate systems
Person Specification: Essential
- Extensive experience in scenic construction within a professional theatre or similar environment
- Excellent skills in carpentry and/or metal fabrication
- Strong knowledge of workshop health and safety, including use of machinery and tools
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and design plans
- Good organisational and time management skills
- Positive team player with a proactive and flexible approach
- Comfortable working to tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Desirable
- Experience supervising a team or leading projects in a workshop setting
- Training in manual handling, first aid, or operation of lifting equipment
- Experience working on touring productions or external builds
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g. AutoCAD or Vectorworks) or digital fabrication tools (e.g. CNC, laser cutters)
- Knowledge of current CDM regulations
General
- To assist the BTS Head of Workshop in maintenance and safe use of all workshop equipment (loose tools, equipment and machinery within carpenters shop, steelwork shop, props shop and paint shop).
- To undertake any other duties which are consistent with the function of the job including building and carpentry maintenance in other areas of the theatre’s operations, attending staff meetings and training courses.
- In so much as duties permit support other departments if called upon.
- To develop an understanding of the Belgrade Theatre brand
- To work at all times within the Theatre’s Equal Opportunities Policy, and especially to create and maintain equality of access for local people to appropriate activities for self-expression within an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect.

Terms and Conditions:
- To start As Soon As Possible 2026
- This is a permanent post, working a basic 39 hours per week over five days, working between 8am and 11pm Monday to Saturday working on the Annualised Hours contract. Hours and working times as required, with expectations of overtime.
- This is a Deputy HOD Grade post
- Main place of work is Red Lane but attendance at the Belgrade Theatre is necessary, with the possibility of visiting other sites on fit-ups
- There is a trial period of three months after which a review will be held.
- The salary for the post is £35k gross pa
- The notice period is one month
- Overtime is payable for Bank Holiday & Sunday working. All other overtime will be considered as TOIL, however in agreement with your Line Manager overtime may be paid on commercial builds budget prevailing

BTS Variations from April 2017
This agreement applies to permanent production and stage staff as follows – BTS employees, Deputy Technicians and Assistant Technicians
The principle of the Annualised Hours Agreement is to bring flexibility into the working week to allow some of the ebbs and flows of work load to be offset by TOIL when the work pattern allows, rather than paid overtime; and to use Casuals as part of this management in order to maintain an active pool of skilled Casuals that the Theatre needs to be able to function efficiently
For Permanent BPS & Stage Staff
- Normal working week will be Monday to Saturday
- This post is on an annualised hours basis, based on total hours for the year of 2028, average weekly hours 39
- There is a basic salary, which sets the overtime rate payable, and the AHA Payment which is 8.1% higher than the basic salary and which is paid in return for the flexible working.
- The Holiday/TOIL year is September – August of each year
- TOIL will be scheduled by Management to allow the employee to take it but where operational circumstances does not allow this, excess hours shall be paid at the end of the term on time and a half of the Overtime Rate. Unless there are exceptional circumstances only one week’s TOIL will be paid at Period End. It is agreed that heavy Commercial BTS Workload may lead to BTS Period End payment rising to two weeks.
- Visiting Company Get Outs (unless by future agreement this becomes part of normal working hours), and working on Bank Holidays or 7th day (which is currently specified as Sunday, as per UK Theatre/BECTU agreement) will fall outwith the annualised hours and shall be paid at the prevailing rates unless TOIL is agreed (for Bank Holiday or 7th day/Sunday working) instead.
- Missed Meal Breaks shall be paid as per the UK Theatre/BECTU Agreement. The MMB provision is unlikely to apply to BTS employees working in the workshop.
- Under normal circumstances the maximum working week would be 60 hours with at least one day free from work and the overnight break would be 11 hours; however exceptional circumstances may occasionally require these limits to be waived but only emergencies should breach the one free day.
- Otherwise breaks, overnight breaks, maximum working day, maximum working week shall all be governed by current Working Time and Health & Safety regulations. Derogation will be as per UK Theatre/BECTU Agreement.
- The hours will be self monitoring and overseen by the HOD
- Flexible working will be managed on a departmental basis
Holidays
- All staff are due 25 days per annum + public holidays (pro rata), rising by one day per year’s service, to a maximum of 30 days pa + public holidays
- All holiday and TOIL must be taken with regards to operational needs within holiday year which shall be the same period as the TOIL term. By law, 28 days must be taken within the holiday year. In exceptional circumstances permanent staff may carry over a maximum of 5 days to the next holiday year (to be taken by the end of the Quarter following the end of the term or it is lost)
- For the purposes of holiday or sickness, one week is 39 hours; one day is 7 ¾ hours
- There may not be a “Christmas Closure” at Red Lane though some staff may still be able to take holiday/TOIL during this time as long as there is adequate cover as required
- Holiday Pay: shall be calculated as per the UK Theatre/BECTU Agreement
Subsistence Payments when Absent from Base (UKT/BECTU Clause 2.22.2)
Subsistence payments may not be claimed unless the evening meal break is taken (in which case the Over 8 hours payment applies); or the call requires an early start (in which case the Over 4 Hours payment applies); on a day when both an early start is required and an evening meal break is taken then the Over 12 Hours payment applies. The Overnight payment covers 24 hours.
