Become a Trustee

Film, television and radio shape how we understand the world. They document political change, cultural identity, scientific progress and everyday life. In post-16 education — across universities, further education colleges, sixth forms and specialist providers — they are teaching tools, primary sources and catalysts for critical thinking.

Learning on Screen’s library of more than 4.5 million broadcasts ensures that film, television and radio are preserved, accessible and meaningfully used across UK post-16 education. Our emphasis on audiovisual literacy aim to ensure that the moving image and sound becomes as important to learning and teaching as the written word.

We are seeking new Trustees to join our Executive Council.
Trustees play a vital role in safeguarding our charitable purpose, ensuring financial resilience and providing strategic oversight in a complex digital and rights environment. This is an opportunity to contribute to a national organisation with cultural, educational and technological significance.

We are particularly interested in experience in:

Digital streaming & platform strategy
Senior experience within consumer-facing streaming or subscription-based digital services. This includes an understanding of platform economics, licensing and rights frameworks, audience expectations and long-term sustainability. We are seeking strategic insight into how digital platforms remain competitive, trusted and financially viable — and how that thinking can strengthen a mission-led educational service.

Charity finance & sustainability
Substantial experience of financial leadership and governance within a charity, membership body or similarly complex organisation. This may include CFO or Finance Director experience, or Board-level oversight of financial strategy, audit, regulation, reserves and risk. We are looking for disciplined financial judgement and constructive challenge to ensure long-term stability without compromising mission.

Archiving & audiovisual heritage
Senior expertise in audiovisual archives, digital preservation or collections strategy at sector level. This includes understanding preservation standards, copyright and rights frameworks, and the balance between long-term stewardship and meaningful access. Experience working across cultural or broadcast settings would be particularly valuable.

We also welcome expertise in governance, commercial partnerships, marketing or public policy.

We are looking for individuals who think strategically, bring independent judgement and care about sustaining access to audiovisual culture within education. Trustee experience is welcome but not essential.

Commitment
  • Four Board meetings per year (hybrid, with one in person)
  • Committee participation where appropriate
  • Three-year term (renewable, up to three terms)
  • Voluntary role (expenses reimbursed)

If you want to help shape the future of audiovisual access in post-16 education, we would love to hear from you.
