Cornish Metals is an AIM listed Company working towards re-opening the 100% owned and fully permitted South Crofty underground tin mine in Pool, Cornwall.  

In March 2025, we raised £57.4 million, anchored by the UK’s National Wealth Fund and Vision Blue Resources to advance South Crofty towards tin production once again.  Tin is essential for electronics, renewable energy, and modern technology and demand is projected to increase by 30% in the next decade.

Role requirements

The Health & Safety Project Officer to support the safe and compliant operation of South Crofty 

Mine.  Reporting to the EHST Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring the Company meets all statutory Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) requirements for both surface and underground. 

This is a hands-on role involving site inspections, risk assessments, accident investigation and the development and maintenance of HSE systems, procedures and reporting.   This is a fixed term role until June 2028.

Principle responsibilities/role tasks

Specific duties as part of the role include, but are not limited to, the following:

Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant UK health, safety and environmental legislation across surface operations.
  • Conduct workplace risk assessments and develop safe systems of work.
  • Undertake regular site inspections to ensure compliance and uphold safety standards.
  • Work alongside contractors to build safe systems of work which align with South Crofty standards, ensuring they are upheld throughout their time on site.
  • Monitor, review and update safety procedures and controls. Maintain and apply knowledge of current HSE legislation and best practice.
  • Oversee COSHH, fire safety, occupational health risks and environmental controls.
  • Ensure fire risk assessments and environmental surveys are completed and actions implemented.

Incident Management and Investigation

  • Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses.
  • Gather evidence, take statements and prepare investigations reports.
  • Support regulatory reporting and where required, represent the Company in legal or regulatory proceedings.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of health, safety and environmental standards and implement the agreed actions.
  • Read, analyse and present technical reports to ensure compliance with all legislation.
  • Commission reports and samples to be taken and any additional work required. 
  • Record and manage the data within the HSE Department. 
  • Complete statutory and system forms as required.

Reporting and Data Management

  • Maintain accurate HSE records, databases and statutory documentation 
  • Produce regular weekly and monthly reports
  • Where required, analysis and present technical information for internal and external stakeholders.

Training and Communication

  • Deliver toolbox talks, inductions and safety training as required. 
  • Promote safe working practices and uphold the Company’s values and expectations
  • Build good working relationships with site staff, contractors and managers.
  • Provide regular updates to the EHST Manager and support the development of annual action plans. 

Emergency and Site Support

  • Assist in emergency response planning and coordination.
  • Provide on site HSE support for operational activities and projects.

Working environment

This is an on-site role based at South Crofty mine.   While mainly desk based, it will involve some/regular movement around the site, , for meetings, training and project related activities as well as occasional external meetings across the UK.


Key relationships

The role will report to the EHST Manager, but there will be frequent interaction with the Project Manager, Project Engineers, site management and the executive team.

External relationships will include regulators, contractors, suppliers, local communities and stakeholders.

 
Skills and experience

The key skills and experience which are expected for this role are:

Essential

  • NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent RQF Level 3 qualification.
  • Previous experience of working as a Health and Safety professional for at least 2 years in the extractive, construction or industrial sectors.
  • Strong understanding of HSE legislation for both surface and underground mine operations.
  • Excellent communication, organisation and time management skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.

Desirable

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent
  • Membership of a professional Health and Safety body e.g. IOSH
  • Qualifications in Noise, COSHH, HAVS, Risk Assessment or Workplace Auditing
  • Demonstrable experience within the UK mining industry.
  • Knowledge of HSE management systems and databases.
 

Hours of work and work location

Full Time 37.5 hours a week, Monday to Friday between 8:00am and 4:00pm, based at the South Crofty Mine site in Pool, Redruth.  The role may occasionally require availability outside standard working hours to support operation activities and other events.  

Part time arrangements (minimum 30 hours a week) will be considered.
