Befriending Volunteer Role Description

The Role Purpose

This is a community based role, supporting adults with a learning disability to pursue their interests or access services and reduce their social isolation.

Principle activities

  • To build a trusted and inclusive relationship that benefits both parties and strengthens participation within the local community
  • To help some one with a learning disability to take part in organised group or personal activities that they have chosen to do with the volunteer or agreed with the charity is a priority for them
  • To discuss option for activities and interests that help build confidence and indepenence 
  • To build friendship and support access to networks that build their interests and social circle.

About us

Balance is looking for volunteers who are keen, creative, and fun and who will support people with learning disabilities to explore their interest and hobbies.

We are a community based charity working across South West London with a commitment to increasing the independence, self-assurance and confidence of adults with a learning disability on enduring mental health support need. We believe that everyone what every their disability has the right to participate fully within their communities, work, play or love.  This role is key to supporting those objectives.

The Commitment

  • Support is needed usually 10am – 3pm or evenings 6pm -9pm but there is some flexibility depending on the agreement between the volunteer and befriendee.
  • All our volunteers will need to provide two references and a DBS check.
  • We ask for a commitment of one session a week/fortnight in return we offer the opportunity to make a real difference to someone’s life.
  • Out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed as agreed and training will be provided as an induction and on-going programme of support

Surbiton, New Malden & Kingston Area

Principle Strengths Required

Ability to empower 
Patience and understanding
An interest in the local community and what it offers
The ability to recognise and hear the opinion of someone with a learning disability

Ability to commit to 4 hours once a week/fortnight for a minimum of 6 months.
