Job Purpose 

To support external communications and Open Seas’ campaign activity by maximising the impact of digital connections. 

As part of a small, but growing team, you will be key in developing and delivering impactful communications with a strong focus on social media. You will be responsible for producing varied communications materials, creating novel eye-catching content to engage the public and enhance our reach and dialogue with key audiences.  Working with our Head of Communications you will also provide communications support for our external campaigns and activities. 
  
You will work in a small collegiate team to ensure collaborative delivery of other core activities, including stakeholder engagement, administration and project work.

Job Description

Support public communications by carrying out activities pursuant to communications and campaigns planning, including:

Social media 
  • Produce and publish high quality social media content in support of Open Seas’ objectives and mission
  • Provide social media planning 
  • Monitor social media channels and engage with our online community
  • Data analysis and preparing reports on social media performance and assisting with campaign performance reports
  • Ensure consistency of brand/tone on social media
  • Assist with delivery of in-house social media training with colleagues and partner organisations as necessary
  • Grow knowledge of Open Seas’ key audiences and their preferences

Campaigns 
  • Support development of campaigns 
  • Draft communications for a range of media 
  • Draft press releases

Content production and management
  • Generate digital assets, eg infographics, social media shareables, video, including occasionally print materials
  • Work with colleagues across the organisation to manage our library of content assets
  • Produce material for and distribute our regular digital newsletter
  • Assist with researching, writing and publishing articles for the Open Seas website for/with relevant members of the team

Stakeholder engagement
  • Undertake activity to build our supporter base and manage our mailing lists
  • Identify and develop relationships with relevant stakeholders as agreed with your line manager
  • Report back to executive at weekly meetings

Administrative and project support
  • Schedule and organise meetings if required
  • Support the work of Open Seas as appropriate, including project work. 


Essential criteria 

  • Two years proven experience in a relevant role  
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills across messaging, grammar, punctuation, nuance, tone and style. 
  • Ability to translate complex policy language into accessible public communications
  • Strong graphic design skills for print and online
  • Proficiency in producing digital content, ie use of video and image editing software, eg Canva, After Effects, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro
  • In depth and up to date knowledge of the main social media platforms
  • Awareness of SEO and web accessibility best practice
  • Experience of using a website CMS, eg Wordpress or equivalent
  • Excellent collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Experience and understanding of good governance 
  • Ability to travel, and to self-manage 
  • High motivation levels 
  • IT skills sufficient to perform duties without secretarial support 

Desirable criteria 

  • Web development skills, eg proficiency in HTML, CSS, JAVA, PHP 
  • Knowledge of marine environmental and fisheries management issues
  • Scientific literacy and understanding of conservation 
  • Experience and commitment to the values of the voluntary sector 
  • Knowledge and interest in current affairs and the media
  • Experience of working with community organisations
