What We’re Looking For We’re after an enthusiastic all-rounder—someone who thrives on applying GIS expertise to real-world research and environmental management, enjoys working with UAVs, and loves getting outdoors.
The ideal candidate will bring the following:
● Strong programming skills (e.g., Python)
● Solid GIS experience and a degree in GIS, environmental science, or a related field
● Robust data management skills, with bonus points for experience in webGIS or CKAN
● The ability to work independently, think creatively, troubleshoot effectively, and communicate clearly
● UAV experience, including surveys or a willingness to train (UAV training provided)

Main Accountabilities
Key Responsibilities
The post holder will play a central role in providing data management, GIS expertise, and technical support to the Falkland Islands Government (FIG), SAERI-led projects, and SAERI’s partners and researchers. Core responsibilities include:
Geospatial Data & Systems Management
● Manage, process, and analyse spatial data using QGIS
● Oversee metadata creation and maintenance
● Develop and upkeep SAERI’s GIS infrastructure, including applying programming skills to CKAN and webGIS systems
● Maintain and enhance the SAERI Data Portals
● Develop and manage databases as required
Research & Technical Support
● Collaborate with SAERI project managers and stakeholders to manage spatial datasets and produce high-quality geospatial products
● Provide technical advice and support to GIS users across the SAERI network
● Deliver introductory GIS training sessions for first-time users
Remote Sensing & UAV Operations
● Conduct UAV surveys to support research activities such as wildlife monitoring and habitat mapping
● Acquire, process, and analyse Earth Observation data (e.g., NDVI, NDWI)
Additional Expectations
● Travel internationally for work when required
● Be proactive in learning new skills to address technical gaps
● Troubleshoot and resolve technical challenges as they arise
● Carry out other duties reasonably assigned by the line manager, commensurate with the role
