 Aim of post

 The Belgrade Theatre is a busy organisation producing and presenting plays in two auditoria, a full programme of community engagement, talent development and education work and an expanding Events and Conferencing business, fully operational Monday to Saturday until late with occasional Sunday performance openings and frequent Sunday hires.  Our Catering Operations run 7 days/week.  

 This post is in charge of all organisational and administrative aspects for delivering performances as well as driving Front of House (FOH) and Conferencing Sales for the Theatre’s business

 With a passion for theatre and its role within the community, the team member will support the Front of House Department’s aims, objectives and responsibilities in this varied and dynamic environment, providing a high standard of customer care and a wide range of services essential to the efficient day-to-day operations of the Belgrade Theatre, its staff, visitors and customers.   Much of this work is centred around theatre performances but there are also daytime Events that Ushers/Stewards will support. 

 Responsibilities

  • Provide a welcoming, professional presence and excellent customer service during performances and events.
  • Greet and seat patrons, assist with access needs, and ensure audience comfort and safety at all times.
  • Sell programmes, refreshments, and merchandise; distribute leaflets; clear litter; and keep public areas clean and tidy.
  • Enforce theatre policies politely to maintain a comfortable environment for all visitors.
  • Be knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the theatre and its productions.
  • Work flexibly, including evenings, weekends, and busy seasons (e.g. pantomime).
  • Support events and conferences under Duty Manager supervision, including ushering, assisting with setups, and liaising with other departments such as Catering.
 
Financial Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate accuracy in all cash handling and record keeping; closely adhering to cash handling procedures.
  • Accurate cashing up of all monies quickly and efficiently
 
General Responsibilities

  • To be the welcoming face to our external and internal customers, and Visiting Companies and artists, providing excellent levels of customer service, working as part of a team to achieve the highest standards of customer service satisfaction.
  • To adhere to Health & Safety and Fire Safety legislation and be part of the team to lead on emergency evacuations
  • To ensure that all front of house areas are kept clean and tidy and presentable at all times.
  • Actively selling Front of House sales lines, including ice creams, sweets, programmes and merchandise
  • To undertake any other duties which are consistent with the function of the job including attending staff meetings and training courses.  Such tasks will not be of an unreasonable nature and shall be commensurate with the level of the post.
  • To develop an understanding of the Belgrade Theatre brand 
  • To work at all times within the Theatre’s Equal Opportunities Policy, and especially to create and maintain equality of access for local people to appropriate activities for self-expression within an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect.
  • To work within the Theatre’s policies, in particular within its Health and Safety policies, and ensure adherence to these policies by freelance workers. 
  • To act as ambassador for the Theatre in general 
 
Required Skills

 Essential

  • Enthusiasm for theatre and its role in the community.

  • Passion for live theatre and interest in the Belgrade’s productions.

  • Strong team player who supports and collaborates with colleagues.
 
Desirable

  • Experience working in a similar customer facing role
  • Cash handling experience 
 
Terms and Conditions

  • Casual role – no guaranteed hours; work is offered and accepted as available.
  • Busiest period: September–May; quieter June–July; usually closed in August.
  • Expected to work around 3 of 8 weekly shifts (Mon–Sat, mainly evenings). Some Sundays/Bank Holidays required, especially during Panto season (overtime rates apply). Daytime shifts may be available for matinees/events.
  • Shifts are a minimum of 3.5 hours, paid monthly at £12.60 per hour.
  • Training: up to 5 shifts during probation (1-week notice). After training, 1-month notice applies. No notice can normally be given 1 Oct–15 Dec.
  • Uniform must be worn and maintained according to policy.
  • Pension: Auto-enrolment with NEST; 3% employer contributions (rising per legislation).
  • Holiday: 28 days (incl. Bank Holidays), increasing to 33 with service; pro rata for part-time/casual staff. Holiday pay based on shifts worked, partly paid in summer. No holiday over Christmas.
  • Transport home provided for late finishes after 11pm.
  • Staff benefits: complimentary tickets (conditions apply), 10% café/bar discount.
  • Agreement based on UK Theatre/BECTU terms, covering sick pay, family leave, grievance, and discipline.
  • Commitment to safeguarding children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
  • Must provide proof of right to work in the UK.
  • Employment starts on the first working day.
