Are you passionate about student wellbeing and higher education? Do you have an eye for detail and a strong sense of fairness? We’re looking for Student Assessors to evaluate universities' approaches to mental health and wellbeing as part of our University Mental Health Charter (UMHC) Award.
This is a flexible, freelance role that allows you to contribute to sector-wide improvements while developing your professional skills.
About the Role
As a Student Assessor, you will:
✅ Evaluate universities’ self-assessments, student-led reports, and supporting evidence.
✅ Facilitate onsite discussions with staff and students to understand their experiences.
✅ Assess how well institutions meet the Principles of Good Practice for student mental health.
✅ Produce a detailed Outcomes Report with recommendations for improvement.
✅ Work collaboratively with a community of Assessors to ensure fairness and consistency.

Who We’re Looking For
We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds, including students and recent graduates with experience in higher education, student representation, or mental health. You’ll need:
🔹 Strong analytical and communication skills.
🔹 The ability to assess evidence fairly and make informed judgments.
🔹 Confidence in facilitating discussions with staff and students.
🔹 A commitment to promoting best practices in student wellbeing.
Additional Notes
🔹Hours of work: 1-2 Award Assessments per academic year
🔹Renumeration: £2000 (inc. VAT) per assessment, plus travel and accommodation expenses; + £200 (inc. VAT) per mandatory in-person training day (this includes initial new assessor training and annual training days going forward), plus travel and accommodation expenses.
🔹Contract: Self-employed
🔹Start date: Must be available to attend two full days of training on Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th July in Leeds - this will include some prerequisite reading. You will be assigned to your first assessment from September 2025 onwards.
