About the Role
As a SBS Practitioner, you will be responsible for providing compassionate and practical support to individuals who have been bereaved by suicide. You will work within a team of practitioners, who work closely together and support each other on a daily basis.
Your work will require you to establish trust quickly, build relationships and to have excellent listening skills. You will develop a wide knowledge of support services and can build and maintain excellent relationships with partner agencies. You will be able to work on your support autonomously, being able to judge when to refer to your manager.
As a Practitioner, you will work within the Suicide Bereavement Support Service pilot framework to ensure that you follow all necessary protocols and procedures and take a role in developing the service. You will keep accurate records and actively contribute to ongoing evaluation of the service. You will undertake training, as agreed with your manager, prior to supporting service users and will continue to access relevant training throughout your time in the role.
You will also support the Suicide Bereavement Support Project Manager in their role to meet national and funder criteria.
Key Responsibilities:
· Work closely with the Suicide Bereavement Support Project Manager to achieve strategic and operational outcomes
· Provide emotional and practical support to people bereaved by suicide
· Keep comprehensive notes of the support that provided
· Have a flexible and responsive approach to meeting the changing needs of supported people
· Signpost people to local organisations or groups as appropriate
· Work collaboratively with statutory services such as NHS specialist mental health services and GPs, to ensure that joined-up, holistic support is offered
· Develop effective relationships with other groups and agencies in the area and take opportunities to promote mental health awareness in the wider community
· Ensure that people are connected to other Change Mental Health services and to other agencies as appropriate
· Carry out risk assessments and complete safeguarding procedures as required
· Responsible for maintaining relevant systems of documentation
· Work effectively with other members of the team, and liaise effectively with families, agencies, colleagues, partners and other stakeholders
· Participate in training activities and meetings as required
· Collate and provide information and reports for line management
· Contribute to research and project evaluation at a local level in support of National objectives to promote service improvements.
Essential Criteria:
· SVQ 3 in Health and Social Care or have suitable equivalent experience
· Experience of working in a supportive and enabling role
· An understanding of mental health and recovery
· Experience of working in the mental health and recovery field
· An understanding of Trauma-Informed approaches
· Experience in the planning and delivery of support
· Experience of a person-centred approach to recovery
· Can produce structured, accurate and concise written reports
· Can explain complex information in a way which makes it understandable
· Work well in a team setting but can also work autonomously
· A sound theory base of social care interventions including risk assessment
· Can apply an analytical approach to problems in order to find solutions
· Good Standard of IT skills
· Keen to develop your knowledge and skills and attend training
· Have a value base that is consistent with the aims and objectives of Change Mental Health
Successful applicants for this post will require a PVG membership (this will be arranged by Change Mental Health during before you start your role)
Desirable Criteria
· Experience of supporting people in emotional distress
· Knowledge of local support services in the Highlands and/or Argyll and Bute
· Awareness of conflict management strategies
· Experience of building co-operative relationships, developing networks and promoting partnership working with other professionals

· To act in accordance with the charity’s Health & Safety and Safeguarding policies and to notify your line manager promptly if there are any concerns
· To participate in regular supervision and appraisal and undertake any relevant training as appropriate to the role
· To work in accordance with the charity’s national policies and local operating procedures and those of external regulators or professional bodies
