The South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute (SAERI), based in the Falkland Islands, is seeking a GIS Officer, UAV pilot, and database manager. This exciting position is an excellent opportunity to kick-start or continue your GIS and coding career and join a dynamic research team in a wildlife wonderspot. 
 
We’re looking for an excellent all-rounder! Someone that loves applying their GIS skills to support research and management, has an interest in UAVs and loves the outdoors! The ideal candidate will be a proficient programmer using Python, have GIS experience and a university degree in GIS or related discipline. Experience with data management is a must and an understanding of webGIS and CKAN would be advantageous – but is not essential. The successful candidate will be able to work independently, can problem solve, and have excellent communication and time management skills. The ideal candidate will also have experience with UAV surveys and Agisoft Metashape software and a general VLOS certificate, or a willingness to become a proficient UAV pilot. UAV training will be provided.
 
This position is for 1 year, with an opportunity to extend and offers excellent opportunities for professional development. 

Main Accountabilities:

Provide data management and GIS support to the Falkland Islands Government (FIG), SAERI-Led projects and to SAERI partners and researchers, which includes:


●       Manage and process spatial data in QGIS
●       Manage metadata
●       Assist in creating and maintaining our GIS system (i.e., applying your programming skills to CKAN and webGIS)
●       Assist in maintain our data portal (http://dataportal.saeri.org/)
●       Liaise and work with SAERI project managers and stakeholders to help manage spatial data and create data products 
●       Provide technical advice and support other GIS users in the SAERI network as required
●       Undertaking UAV surveys to support, for example wildlife research or habitat mapping
●       Earth observation data acquisition, processing, and analysis (NDVI/NDWI etc.)
●       Develop databases as required.
●       Can deliver basic GIS training to first-time GIS users
●       Willing to travel internationally for work
 
The post holder should be willing to learn new skills to fill technical gaps and be versatile in fixing technical problems within this work area as and when they emerge.
