Subject Intern
The main purpose of the Subject Intern role is to participate in subject-related decision-making processes such as committees and reviews, bringing a student perspective that is rooted in the evidence and ideas of students across the UHI campuses where the related subject(s) are taught. This will include tasks such as reading and evaluating reports about the learning experience, including evidence of student opinion, liaising with many different staff and student representatives, and working in various teams to evaluate the quality of learning in your subject area.
This internship is a pilot in two of UHI’s Cognate Subject Groups, so candidates must be studying anywhere in UHI in 2024-25 in one of these two areas:
· Business, Leisure and the Creative Economy.
· Health, Social Care and Life Sciences.
Key Responsibilities
1. Committees:
a) Serve as student member for your relevant UHI Cognate Subject Group (CSG) Committee, which meets a minimum of three times per year.
b) Serve as student member of other key UHI committees, to be negotiated but likely to include the relevant Faculty Board and UHI’s Academic Council.
2. Reviews:
a) Serve as student member of various UHI quality forums where student input is required, which might involve the approval of new courses, the re-approval of existing courses, or wider quality review activities looking at areas of provision or other processes.
3. Student feedback:
a) Work with HISA staff, SVRs and others to gather and analyse the views of students in your Cognate Subject Group from across the UHI region.
b) Work with the other Subject Intern and the Vice-President (Education) to create an education forum for HISA, to inform HISA’s own policy and direction on learning and teaching.
c) Undertake a research project relating to the quality of the learning experience, on a topic to be agreed with your Associate Dean and the Director of Student Engagement and Representation.
4. Ambassadorial activities:
a) Occasional opportunities to promote the UHI student experience in your subject area at events involving employers, industry or schools.
b) Contribute, if required, to events beyond UHI to explain and promote the Subject Intern scheme and its impact on the student learning experience.
5. Evaluation:
a) Assist with the development of evidence of the scheme’s impact, to meet reporting conditions for its funding.
b) Work with the Associate Deans, Director of Student Representation and others to build a case for the continuation and expansion of the Subject Intern pilot to all of UHI’s subject areas.
