Main Functions: 

To support the participation function of the organisation working with young people across Scotland to support Staf’s Participation strategy, influence policy and practice and to deliver funded participation projects across our membership.

To engage with managers, practitioners and care experienced young people across our membership to ensure we are representative of a range of diverse voices across Scotland. 
 
Specific Duties:

Under the guidance of the Participation & Rights Manager:

Community Development

To develop and support a community of people with care experience to influence and direct Staf’s strategy and current and future participation initiatives.

To co-design activities and opportunities with people with care experience in order that their views can be heard and understood.

To work alongside and support people with care experience in the delivery of training and presentations to a wide range of stakeholders and other young people.

To ensure that Staf is representative of all people with care experience.

To support young people to evaluate the work of Staf participation work, contribute to our ‘Demonstrating Impact’ strategy and to monitor their own personal development.

To support Staf membership and their young people’s involvement in targeted initiatives and events.


Support the evaluation of the Scottish Mentoring & Leadership Programme (SMLP) as required by the SMLP Co-ordinator

To work closely with existing participation projects and colleagues to provide capacity support.

 Support consultants and volunteers with lived experience involved in our work.

To lead and facilitate participation groups and link their needs and aspirations to influence policy and systems change.



Essential 

Experience of the ‘looked after’ sector.

At least three years experience in participation, community development or youth work.

Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage a wide range of tasks with competing priorities and deadlines.  

Experience of working with a wide range of stakeholders and audiences.

Demonstrable experience of working with mixed groups of practitioners and young people.

Ability to use a range of functions in IT packages in particular Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Salesforce (ideally) and Outlook.

Excellent verbal, written, communication and presentation skills with the ability to deal with a diverse range of people.

Experience of developing learning and development packages.

An ability to travel and work out with normal hours for events further afield.

Ability to plan and organise own workload effectively, to ensure that deadlines and standards are met, with some guidance from senior colleagues.

Experience of contributing effectively as a team member with good interpersonal skills.

An understanding of the challenges that face young people in and leaving care.

Desirable

Experience of developing and utilising evaluation packages.

Degree in related field (Social work, Community Education) or relevant experience.

Experience of supporting volunteers (paid and/or unpaid).


Experience and qualifications

Relevant Degree (Eg Community Education) or equivalent professional experience.


Benefits

Holidays: 26 days per annum plus 10 public holidays (pro rata if part time)
Pension: Optional group pension scheme based on employer contributions of 5% plus additional employee contributions of 5%, after three months

Staf is a national organisation which represents all 32 Local authorities in Scotland and is funded by membership fees, Scottish Government and other major charities.
