About us:
Space Solar’s mission is to create an era-defining new solar energy source from space.
In 12 years, Space Solar will deliver an affordable, scalable, and fully renewable new baseload energy technology. We will accelerate the transition to net zero and provide energy security for partner nations, as global demand grows.
Ultimately, we will help create a safer and more secure world where clean energy is available to everyone, for the benefit of all life on earth.
This ground-breaking programme will develop and commercialise space based solar power. Space Solar must become the world’s most knowledgeable entity in space-based solar power technologies, system design, delivery, deployment, and utilisation.
The project will benefit humanity, supplying clean power whilst diminishing reliance on fossil fuels, thereby reducing carbon emissions. It will deliver a huge innovation footprint across sectors from energy to space to robotics. Therefore, the successful candidate must hold sustainability and innovation as key personal values if they are to have credibility both internally and externally.
About the Role:
As Head of Computational & Data Engineering you will be responsible for understanding the engineering, programme, and information management requirements of the company, and developing and implementing a computing and digital strategy which delivers outstanding value in enhancing productivity and development pace.
The value of this role is to accelerate the engineering programme timescales through adoption of the optimum computational tools and systems, reducing the time for development and Verification / Validation; enhancing collaboration; improving the probability of success of the demonstrator products; and bringing insight and actionable intelligence from data.
You will be a recognized expert in the field(s) of (one or more of) HPC (modelling & extreme scale simulation), AI/ML or computer science more generally.
Working closely with the engineering team, you will play a leading role in the development of a Space Solar “Digital Thread”, helping to ensure that decisions are based upon all available data, information, and knowledge.
You will be responsible for maintaining quality of Space Solar knowledge and information management and for promoting and delivering excellent data science and research data management activities. You will drive the exploitation of ‘Big Data’ through the latest AI and AGI technology, helping to ensure that maximal information and knowledge are extracted from Space Solar’s experimental and simulation data.
What you will bring to the team:
- Extensive experience leading knowledge and information management in a complex organisation and/or leading modelling & simulation or data science innovation in a research or engineering environment.
- Significant experience leading a team of Computer/Data Science, HPC, AI/ML, and/or Knowledge and IM experts.
- Ability to manage broad portfolios of work, ensuring systems and roles are in place to prioritise goals, manage budgets and schedules, and communicate with stakeholders whilst enabling agile, iterative, quality-driven approaches to software delivery.
- Ability to communicate, build trust and influence at all levels.
- Deep understanding and experience in practice of modern software engineering.
- Good (ideally "excellent") mathematical ability and deep knowledge in the simulation domain.
- Deep understanding and experience in practice of FAIR research data management principles.
- Sound knowledge and application experience of Simulation Process Data Management (SPDM) and PLM (design data management) techniques and technologies.
