We are looking to expand our team and are looking for the addition of a passionate, committed and proactive Press Officer (US) who will report to the Press and Communications Manager.

The Center for Countering Digital Hate is a US non-profit (501c3) that researches and disrupts the architecture of online hate and misinformation. We are based in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Social media has become a safe space for bad actors. These platforms have contributed to the rise of childhood mental ill-health, the anti-vaccine movement, political misinformation, climate denial, the suppression of access to good information, and the proliferation of identity-based hate.

The Center exists to build a better online world in which everyone's dignity, safety, and human rights are protected. We produce innovative research, lead impactful public campaigns, and advocate for policy change.

Role Description: The Press Officer will be responsible for the day-to-day representation of CCDH's values, policy, and research in the United States and international media. The position requires you to be one of the organization's primary contact points with the press.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring that CCDH's research, analysis, and aims to reach a broad audience and are effectively communicated in the media
  • Draft, edit, and distribute press releases, quotes, reactive statements, broadcast pitches, and opinion pieces
  • Translate technical research findings and detailed policy statements into digestible messaging that resonates with the press and the general public
  • Monitoring the daily and international news agendas to identify proactive opportunities for coverage
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with journalists and build/maintain contact databases
  • Respond to breaking news and incoming requests from journalists
  • Drive coordination and development of press campaigns – both internally and with external stakeholders
  • Briefing and preparing spokespeople ahead of interviews
  • Facilitating interviews for print, TV, radio, and other broadcast
  • Other duties as assigned

Preferred skills and qualifications: 

  • An understanding of how to devise and implement a media strategy – and an ability to draft press releases, articles, blogs, and briefings 
  • Good oral and written communication skills, with excellent attention to detail 
  • An extensive knowledge of the media landscape – especially as it relates to CCDH's work (tech and related policy)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • An ability to work under time pressure, reliably meet tight deadlines and manage parallel workstreams
  • Must be comfortable working in a high-volume environment and can closely follow the messaging of the organization on a wide variety of issues

Compensation Package

Compensation for this role will vary depending on the experience of the candidate and the resulting title. The salary range for this position is $55,000 - $65,000.
